I stared at Connie who had begun to silently cry. Reiner walked up to him and put his hand on his shoulder trying to comfort him. I looked over to Berthold who just glared at me. Gelgar came back up to us, "Hey, something's wrong," he said. I looked at him confused, "what do you mean?"
"Did you find any bodies?" he asked us, we shook our heads, "not yet" Berthold answered, he took his eyes off me and looked around, "how is that even possible?" Gelgar asked, I shrugged.
"Titans ransacked this place and there's not even a speck of blood," I said, I put my hand to my chin and started to rack my brain thinking of what could have happened
"They must've fled!" the overly optimistic soldier next to Gelgar said, "the villagers I mean, they all escaped, uh, you're family too" that last part was directed at Conny. She was far too optimistic for my taste. I had a very bad feeling about what went happened there.
"you think so?" Connie asked, a hopeful smile on his face, "you think they're alive?" I wanted to say something, I didn't want Connie to get his hopes up. I thought about whenever I had gotten my own hopes up, how let down I was after. I clenched my fists at my sides as the soldier answered him, "um yeah, sure! It's the only logical explanation for why there'd be no trace of, well, carnage" I shook my head, I didn't agree with her. From the looks of it Gelgar didn't either, I wanted to smack her stupid smile. Living in the forest I learned to never get my hopes up, always expect the worst. Titans themselves were unpredictable and now that we knew some humans could turn into titans they were more unpredictable. I looked around, the horses were still in the stables, there was no way they got out. It was clear, so why was this stupid soldier getting Connie's hopes up.
"anyone not have a torch?" Gelgar asked, regaining my attention, I looked over to Reiner, Berthold, and Connie who all had torches, "okay let's move," he said. I didn't have a torch, I looked at Reiner worried, "it's okay, stick with me" I nodded my head, "our mission is to evaluate the breach," Gelgar said, with that, we all moved. I looked behind me and saw Connie lingered in his spot for a second and then followed. We went back and hopped on our horses and started riding again. I stuck close to Reiner but I looked behind me. There was Connie, frozen on his horse, staring back at the titan he had been looking at before. His breath was shallow, he was scared, looked as if he had seen a ghost. I rode over to him, "hey Connie," I waved my hand in front of his face, "come on, we're falling behind, we've got to move" I turned my horse back around to follow Reiner and Berthold
"Did you hear that? You had to?" Connie called, following me on his horse, I hadn't heard anything, "Jenny, I swear that Titan-"
"It was only your imagination," Reiner yelled, cutting Connie off. I looked behind us at the titan laying there, "I didn't hear anything, Jenny didn't either, you are imagining things Connie," Reiner continued. The titan and I locked eyes, it was terrifying looking into its eyes. Connie was stuttering to Reiner and Reiner was yelling at him, their voices started to fade as I looked into the titan's eyes.
I started to feel weird, my back and neck started to hurt. Then my vision started blurring and I saw Connie but he was little, he was on the floor and playing. Then I saw little Connie again, running on the grassy field that was in front of the house. I shook my head and heard Reiner yell, "Connie, Jenny, Do you want to be a soldier or not," his horse started running ahead of us and I looked at Connie whose brows furrowed. Yes, I wanted to be a soldier, I wanted to save lives, I wanted to fight alongside my friends. I wanted to prevent other kids from being orphaned as I had.
"Yeah, stay focused," Connie said to himself, I looked over at him and smirked, okay, here we go, I grabbed the reins of my horse and had it follow Reiner back to the group, "I am a soldier" I heard Connie yell behind me, he caught up to me and we found our way back to the group. I thought about what I had seen, how was I able to see Connie's childhood. I shook it off, this wasn't the time to think about that. Maybe it was just my imagination, or I saw what I wanted to see.
