(there are some really small season 4 spoilers in this chapter)

It had been about two months now since I started training. I had already grown a lot stronger physically. We did a lot of runs and other workouts so for once I was finally building muscle. We went on runs with backpacks on our backs, they were hard. The first time we did it I had a tough time keeping up, everyone was far ahead of me, they had all built up their own stamina by now. But it didn't take long for me to be able to catch up, as soon as we did the run the second time I was able to catch up. Ackermann instincts I guess. It was getting hotter, not too hot but hot enough that we had been preparing for our first hike. Armin and I had been writing back and forth, I had also received a letter from Sasha and one from Historia. It was nice to hear from them about how everything was going. I had learned about the experiments they were running on Eren and they sounded interesting, turns out he was getting better at hardening.

The younger cadets had become less scared of us and started sitting with us more and more. I liked them, they were funny, they could be annoying, kind of like little siblings. I felt close to my friends, it had only been two months but we had already been through so much. I spent a lot of my nights awake until curfew talking with Kyla and Lexi, I read them every letter Armin wrote me. I watched Lance continually hit on Kyla and Kyla just laugh it off. I tried to convince Sebastian to join the Scouts with me after graduation, Lance tried to help me too. I told Sebastian how corrupt the Military Police had been before the coup and what the Scouts were doing to take back Wall Maria. Lance and I talked a lot about what the Scouts would be like once we joined. I liked Lance a lot, he was really funny and completely and hopelessly devoted to Kyla. The way his eyes lit up when he talked about her was so cute, I wanted them to get together one day. Maybe they could go on a double date with Armin and me.

"Come on, don't you want to be a part of that?" I asked him, he shook his head, "no way, that is crazy," I scoffed at his remark, "look, by now they've started to clear out the titans, there are hardly any left to fight and once we retake Wall Maria, we'll be one step closer to saving humanity, don't you want to help save everyone?"

"Fine, I'll think about it if you just shut up about it for a second," Sebastian said, I nodded and sat back and ate my dinner.  I listened to my friends talk back and forth, throwing around different theories about our superior officers, we often made up backstories for them, we didn't know what brought them here so we made it up. Then the conversation moved towards who would win in an arm-wrestled, I sat back and laughed as all the guys wrestled each other, Sebastian ended up winning, he was about the oldest of us.

About a week later, preparations for the hike was done and it was time for the 107th cadet corps' first hike. We were split up into teams, we would have to find our way to the mountain base of the Cadet Corps. We had a small map of where to go and we some supplies in our backpacks in case we got lost. I was thankful that they let us choose our squads so I was with Lexi, Kyla, Sebastian, and Lance.

Before I knew it, we had to go out. It was hot outside, I wasn't a big fan of the heat, I loved the sun but the heat was too much. We walked over to the other groups of cadets and they began to let us out squad by squad. I talked with Lexi while we waited to hear our number called. It took a bit for ours to be called, they didn't want us to cheat off the other squads. We started to head out, I had the map and Lance had the compass, we were supposed to all work together. However, Lance took one look at the map and started to lead. I tried to follow him closely but he had been walking quite fast. Lexi, Kyla, and Sebastian were behind me.
