I woke up on the grass in the meadow. The rain was now gone and the sun shone down on me. I wondered for a moment what I was doing there, then everything from the night before came flooding back into my mind. The tears returned but I knew I had to go back. I had to see that she was still ok. I looked around and then jumped back through the portal. I walked back to the palace. I walked through the door and was immediately greeted with an enormous hug from Jess.
"I knew you'd come back. Why'd you storm out? I was so worried about you!" She exclaimed.
I wanted to hold onto her. I wanted to kiss her soft lips and tell her that I loved her. I wanted to hold her and make her safe from everything that she was going to go through. I wanted her to be mine but she couldn't because of some stupid prophecies. I grabbed her arms and pulled them off, holding them so she wouldn't put them back. As a tear rolled down my cheek once more, her smile faded.
"We need to talk." I said, turning my head to the side and wiping the tear from my eye.
I hated it when she saw me cry. I led her over to a lounge chair and she sat down looking impatiently at me, waiting for me to begin."For thousands of years there have been two realms. The Human Realm and the Fey Realm. Humans have never known of our realm and none of them have come here and stayed human."
She gasped. "What do they turn into? Am I still human? I don't feel different." She rambled nervously.
"Many are turned into either faeries or vampires. The cre-"
"What are you?" She asked softly.
"I'm a vampire. I'm a monster." I said, ashamed.
"You're not a monster." She said reassuringly.
"Anyway, in this realm we have many prophecies of things that will happen. One of the prophecies stated that one day, bad things would be coming out of hiding. Things that would overpower us. We wouldn't know anything about them unless we found this one person in the world. The one one who would give it all meaning. One who would fight and have unlimited strength and power. One who would define everything that is to happen. That one person would be called 'The Definer'. I was sent to find her when I found you. Creatures which we call tevits, have been pouring out of nowhere all over the place. Vampires are the only creatures from the Fey Realm that are allowed to enter the Human Realm. Them and elite guardians. These tevits don't exactly respect these rules and have been harming humans. The Definer will end up marrying a prince. A prince of Fey. She will find out everything we need to know to defeat the tevit and all other evil creatures." I paused, unable to speak of what was supposed to happen next. She looked up at me with expectant eyes so I continued. "The Definer will then die fighting. Good will win but the cause of all the glory will die..." I finished. She looked at me through shocked eyes. There was a moment of silence before she spoke.
"Do you know who The Definer is?" She asked slowly.
"Yes. Jessica, you are The Definer." She gasped and her eyes watered.
"I don't want to marry a prince of fey! I want to be with you! I don't want to die. I want us to live long lives together!" She wailed.
I pulled her into a tight hug and rested my head on hers. Both of us shed our tears together.
"I know. I want nothing more but the prophecies never lie and never change."
"What about the blonde haired boy? Is he one too?" She asked.
"Daniel. Yes. He is. He's the reason I'm here." I replied.
She pulled back out of the hug. "What? How? Why?"
"Four years ago, he came to my house and killed my mother while I was in the back garden. I heard her scream. I found her covered in blood. Daniel was standing over her body. He probably would have killed me then if it wasn't for the worried neighbours knocking at the door. He ran out the back door and I followed him. He was definitely a vampire so he must have been going at a slow enough speed that I wouldn't lose him and fast enough that I wouldn't catch him. He led me into the town and through a portal. As soon as I was in the Fey Realm, I was breaking the rules unknowingly and he was in the right to kill me. He called two others. Max and Alan. He played with me for a little while, throwing punches and slaps. Hard enough to hurt me but not to knock me off my feet. He then threw me against a tree. I was losing a lot of blood and I probably would have died if it wasn't for the girl." I said.
"The girl?" She asked.
"She was a beautiful girl with black wavy hair that cascaded down her back. No where near as beautiful as you, but still beautiful. She fought the three guys at once. She stuck a dagger in one of their mouths, obviously to get venom on it and threw it at my leg. I passed out and when I woke up, I was a monster. I did't know what happened to any of them. I hadn't seen Daniel since that day until I saw him at your place." I explained.
"And your dad?" She asked carefully.
"He died in a car crash along with my brother when I was four." I said sadly.
"I'm so sorry." She said.Just then, Ariana walked in and gave me a big hug.
"Have you told her about her duties?" She asked, looking down at Jess.
"Yes" I said looking down at my feet.
"You both must learn to move on. She is destined to be with another and the prophecies never change." She stated firmly. "For now I need you to go on another mission. There have been a group of tevits spotted in Jessica's neighbourhood. I need you to make sure that they don't harm anyone." She said.
I didn't feel like going on a mission at a time like this but I had never refused and I wasn't about to start now. I nodded my head and walked off to the training centre to grab some clothes, leaving Ariana and Jess alone in the common room.Once I was in the training room, I chose a black outfit. I looked through the weapons. I chose three daggers and a cross bow which I loaded on my back. I ran out the door but was stopped by Jess who was right outside, waiting for me. As soon as I saw her she threw herself at me at me and pressed her lips against mine. This time I didn't object. I pushed her up against the wall and kissed her deeply.
"I don't care what the prophecies say. I love you" she whispered.
I smiled against her lips and kissed her again.
"You had better get going before Aleric sees you smooching with his new weapon." Emane said from down the hall.
I immediately pulled away from Jess and looked at him angrily. He turned on his heel and walked away. I kissed her on the forehead once more.
"I do have to go, my love." I said and turned to leave.
She grabbed my arm and said, "Stay safe... For me."
I smiled and walked off down the hall.I walked down the streets to the portal that would lead me closer to town. The streets in the Fey Realm were much nicer than that of the Human Realm. Whatever is valuable to the humans is the opposite to us. To anyone like me that spent most of their time with the humans, this realm was amazing. The sidewalks were lined with gold and had jewels along the sides. The houses were made of stone with a silver coat over each wall. Vines winded up and around the windows. Since most of the fey spent all their time outdoors, the houses were small but beautiful. I rushed through the next portal tree and came out in an alley way. As soon as I left the portal and looked around, I saw them. A lot of them! There were about 100 and counting, pouring out of a wall at the end of the alley. I knew I would be majorly outnumbered so I quickly called for help on my badge. Every fey had one. It worked like a phone, only the messages were delivered magically. As soon as I looked up from my badge, I saw a tevit standing right in front of me. They were only short- half my size. I retrieved a dagger from my vest and dug it into the creature's chest. I watched as it burst into a cloud of dust that settled on the floor. Every other tevit was now coming at me.
Oh no! I turned and ran. To my surprise and annoyance, they were faster than me. They jumped on my back, pushing me to the ground. I grabbed two more daggers and began stabbing them repeatedly. No matter how many I killed, more just kept coming.
"Dean!" Someone called from the end of the alley.
I was thankful to see that it was one of three guardians coming towards me. Just then, one of them grabbed my head then slammed it down onto the concrete. My vision went blurry and I could feel the pain on the back of my head. Due to my being a vampire, it was not fatal. Painful yes, but not fatal. Suddenly, another one bit into my arm, releasing its painful venom into my arm. Okay. Now it was fatal! The guardians pushed them off me, stabbing each one with twists, turns and flips as they went. They had always had a reputation for fighting in style. As soon as the creatures were off me, I dragged myself away from the fight. I felt the back of my head with my hand and brought it down in front of my face. My hand was covered in red blood. It wasn't healing. I thought the effects of tevit bites were just myths but apparently not. My body was getting weaker by the second and I could feel my eyelids getting heavy.
"Must stay awake. For Jessica." I mumbled to myself.
Her words ran through my head again. The smile on her face. The taste of her kisses. The warmth of her arms around me. I was filled with happiness whenever I was with her. Just before my eyes fell shut, I saw the three guardians run toward me. One made a force field, stopping any tevit from getting past, while the other two grabbed my arms, pulling me towards the portal. Then everything blacked out.
