We sat together and sobbed on the floor. Emily's eyes were red and swollen. Her normally perfect mascara was now stained lines down her pale cheeks. I wondered when dad would get home. I looked at my watch. It was kind of hard to see through blurred and wet eyes but I could vaguely make out the hands pointing to the nine and the six.
Nine thirty? Dad should be home by now.
I looked around the dark room. I noticed something faintly glimmering from the reflection of the light on the street. I stood up with shaky legs wobbling. Emily looked at me but didn't question what I was doing. I walked over and picked up the shining piece. In my palm laid a key ring with a lightning bolt with the swirl. I let that person on the street get away and they were the person that killed her. I flipped the key ring over between my fingers and my breath caught as I noticed the writing engraved into the back of it. Clearly carved into the metal was a message. Now what are you going to do. Mummy is dead and your pretty little boyfriend is away. We should meet sometime. I'll even give you a hint to where you might find me.
Over the hill and out of the way,
Where all of the fishes do stay,
Down, down, down and to the right,
Find me at the dead of night.Good luck. I'll be waiting.
Come alone.
-DI shoved the keyring in my pocket and grabbed Emily's arm.
"Have you got anywhere to go? A friend's house or something?" I asked urgently.
"I don't want to go anywhere... I can't." She said in a weak voice.
I sighed and pulled out my badge and sent a quick message to Ariana. Thankfully, she replied within seconds.
I'm so sorry about your mum. She can stay with me for a while.
"Emily, I'm taking you somewhere and you have to trust that this person will keep you safe. Don't ask questions because majority of them I won't be able to answer." I told her.
She simply nodded weakly and let me pull her down the stairs. I pulled her along with me all the way to the portal in the meadow. She shrieked as I jumped through the tree and almost managed to break free of my grasp before I made it through. It didn't take long before we reached the palace. It was kind of uncomfortable though with all the fey giving us deadly looks as us two humans went bombarding through their streets. I said the magic words to open the door and barged through. Ariana was waiting for me there. I pushed Emily into her arms and immediately felt guilty as I noticed I had accidentally pushed too hard. I spun and went to rush back out the doors but Ariana caught my arm.
"Where do you think you're going, Miss Adams?" She asked.
"I have to take care of something. Please, let me go."
She let out a long sigh, "Fine but don't do anything stupid."
I nodded but she didn't let go of me.
"Promise?" She urged.
I gulped, "Promise."I hated lying to her. She let go and I rushed out the door and towards Dean's place. I burst through the door and to the bedroom. I retrieved a small orange backpack from the cupboard and began stuffing things inside. Not long ago, I had Dean come with me to get some clothes from home so pretty much all of my clothes items were here. I grabbed out my lavender blouse and some denim three quarter shorts and quickly changed into them. I shoved some clothes into my bag because I had no idea how long I'd be gone or how much I would need. I shoved in some shirts and shorts. Two daggers and a whip, just in case I needed protection. I ran out to the kitchen and added three bottles of water and a few packets of chips. I grabbed my bow and the quiver of arrows, slung them over my shoulder along with the backpack and rushed out the door. I didn't know the Fey Realm that well so I decided to first try the Human Realm to find the answer to D's riddle. I ran to the portal that led to the meadow.
I arrived at my place and went through the already broken down door. There were now forensics and detectives marks everywhere. I stopped just inside the door and decided I didn't want any traces of me there. Accused murder was really not what I needed. I turned back and went to the side of the house where I could see my bedroom window. I lazily dropped my bag on the grass and looked up the brick wall. Despite my subconscious yelling at me saying, "DANGER! DANGER!", I went and grasped tightly onto the bricks and lodged my foot into one of the gaps, using it to haul myself up. The sharp edges of the bricks cut through the flesh of my hands and I could feel the stinging, burning pain as the skin tore open. I reached up and grabbed the next gap until I was all the way to my bedroom window. I was glad that I always left my window cracked open because it made it easy for me to push up the glass and climb through.
