I stood in Dean's kitchen as I typed a quick message to my friends. I was overjoyed that I was finally spending time with my friends again. I was a little nervous about Hailey being that close to Dean with that personality of hers but I was almost certain that he would get along well with Mitch and Jake. It only took a moment for Mitch to reply.
Sure. Haven't seen you in ages girl. Where did you want to go? He sent.
I wasn't in the mood to keep typing messages so I quickly dialled his number and brought the phone up to my ear.
"Hey." He said when he answered. "Where have you been? We are usually especially inseparable during summer break."
"I've been away." I said. It wasn't completely a lie. I mean, I haven't even been in the same realm.
"Like, on a holiday? Where to?"
"You probably wouldn't know the place."
"You've been playing with the new guy haven't you?"
How did he always know when I was lying.
"Yes." I admitted.
"Ha! I knew it. Jake asked where you'd been and that was my first guess. I mean, for those three weeks, you didn't really think we'd believe you had to clean out your sock draw and help your mum make curtains. Seriously, why didn't you just tell us?"
"Well, it's a little more complicated than you could ever imagine. Can we please change the subject."
"Fine. I'll question you later. Where do you want to meet up?"
I thought about it for a moment. I thought of the meadow but quickly changed my mind. That was a special spot for Dean and I. I didn't think I was ready to share it, even with my friends.
"The edge of the forest. Closest to my place." I suggested.
"Ok. I'll call the others. I wouldn't want to interrupt with your fun time with him." He said. I could hear teasing voice through the phone and could picture him smiling through the phone.
"Oh, shut up. Bye." I laughed.
"Bye."
"You spoke to your friends?" Dean asked, walking into the room.
He had on a blue button-up shirt and jeans. His beautiful eyes stared into mine as he came and wrapped his arms around me. I lifted my arms to around his neck and stroked my fingers through the back of his chocolate coloured hair.
"I sure did." I said flirtatiously.
He laughed his beautiful laugh. I felt like he had melted my heart into a puddle.
"Why are you laughing?" I asked.
"I find you beautifully hilarious when you try to impress me with that voice. You need no voice other than your own natural voice to impress me, my love. The way you stand and walk and even breathe impresses me." He said with a smile.
I pressed my lips against his for a second before turning and walking to the fridge. I grabbed out a bottle of water and began drinking it. My phone buzzed and I dropped my drink. I quickly tried to catch it again but it kept falling. Just before it hit the ground, it stopped. I looked at it in astonishment. I didn't realise until that moment that my hand was outstretched and I could feel the power pouring out of my arm. Was I really doing that. I looked up at Dean and his face held the same amount of astonishment. I smiled and as I did, the bottle dropped to the floor, water spilling across the floor.
"Did you... How did you... What?" Dean stuttered.
"I think it was me. I could feel the power. It was incredible."
"You need to learn to use it." Someone said from behind me. I turned around and saw Aleric standing in the doorway.
"How did you know?" I asked.
"Oh, come on. You are so strong that I could feel it from down the street." He replied as if it was obvious.
I looked at Dean. He was still frozen in his position.
"I get what you mean by 'We can feel her power'. It felt like the only thing in the world when she was using it. She is strong." Dean said.
I remembered the dinging sound from my phone and pulled it out of my pocket.
Spoke to the others. Meet at the forest at 3:00pm. Said the message from Mitch.
I looked at the time. It was already 2:26. We had to hurry.
"I'm sorry Aleric. We are going out and we need to get ready." I said, pushing Aleric with every ounce of strength in my body.
He wouldn't budge. I hated being so weak compared to everyone in this realm.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"Out with some friends."
"Ah. Human friends. I'll come... For protection." He argued.
"No need. Dean is coming." I said quickly.
"Dean? He's useless and weak. I'm coming whether you like it or not."
"Excuse me? He's right there you know. What happened to, 'she's The Definer, she gets what she wants'?"
"When it comes to safety, that rule doesn't apply."
"Oh, let them have some fun grumpy pants." Ariana said, walking into the cramped space.
She looked beautiful. She had a golden triangular shaped ring laying on her perfectly wavy long brown hair. Hanging on the front was a crystal that lay on her forehead. She wore a green ankle-long dress that had sleeves that hung loosely around her wrists.
"Dean is a better fighter than you think and I doubt the tevits will attack them in broad daylight while they are with a group of humans." She said.
"Ugh! Fine. You can go but, if my new toy doesn't come home good as new, then I get permission to kill Dean."
"No!" I cried.
"Fine." Ariana also said at the same time.
"Ok. Good deal." He said and walked off.
"What the hell! You can't let him kill Dean!" I yelled.
"Calm down Jess." Dean said gently.
"He is not as tough as he acts. My magic could beat his fighting skills any day. I could blow him off of his feet with just a wave of my hand before he could even touch me or Dean." She laughed.
We reached the edge of the forest just before three. I was glad to see that the others weren't there yet.
"So, how can I impress your friends?" Dean asked.
I laughed. "You are kidding me right? You are like pure perfection amongst us."
"If you say so my love."
Seconds later, Mitch and Hailey appeared, laughing and talking as they approached us. When she saw me she ran at me and gave me a big hug, almost making me fall backwards.
"It's nice to see you too." I laughed.
"Come on Hailey, you're choking her." Mitch laughed.
Hailey pulled back and Mitch took her place embracing me. I could see Dean flinch from the corner of my eye when Mitch hugged me. Jake suddenly appeared from out of a bush.
"Gosh, you started the hugs without me." He said.
He pushed Jake away and wrapped his arms around me. He lifted me off of my feet and swung me around. I thought at that point, Dean was going to come and grab me and pull me away.
"You brought someone with you." Hailey noted, scanning Dean's body with a satisfied smile.
"Hey! You're mine." Mitch laughed.
"Gosh, just because I'm with you, doesn't mean I can't dream." Hailey laughed.
Mitch embraced her from behind and pulled her eyes away from Dean.
"Better." He said.
We all laughed.
"Jess, can I talk to you please?" Jake asked.
"Sure." I replied and we walked off a bit into the bush.
He turned to me and pressed his lips against mine once we were out of sight of the others. The weird thing about it was that I didn't pull back. His lips were warm unlike Dean's but nowhere near as soft.
Once he pulled back, I spoke. "What was that?"
"Something I've wanted to do for ages. I thought I'd better do it before you got involved with that guy."
I was speechless.
"Say something. Please."
"I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I'm with Dean."
I look of sadness covered his face and he looked down at his feet.
"Sorry." He mumbled.
I pulled him into a tight embrace.
"I love you and always will, just not like that." I reassured.
Just then, we heard a spine-chilling scream. I heard a deep growl. Tevits.
I ran towards the scream. Just inside the forest, out of sight, a scared Mitch and Hailey stood behind a fighting Dean.
"Jess! Get your friends out of here now! Take them to the Fey Realm."
"The what?!" Jake asked.
"There is no way I am leaving you!" I yelled back, completely ignoring Jake.
I saw a tevit about to jump on Dean. I instinctively outstretched my arms. I felt a ball of power flowing out each arm before a giant red bolt struck the filthy creature. It immediately burst into a puff of dust.
"What the hell was that?!" Dean yelled.
"Me. I don't know what it was but it helped! Hailey, Mitch, Jake! Stay behind us!" I ordered.
Jake ran over to the others and I ran so I was just behind Dean. I struck bolt after bolt and each one hit a tevit, turning it to dust. The bolts were actually quite beautiful. The first one I shot was red... Then orange... Then yellow... Then green, blue and purple before the pattern started over again.
Soon enough, every tevit that had been there was laying on the ground in a pile of dust.
"We need to get your friends out of here!" Dean called.
"They won't allow them in the Fey Realm will they?" I asked.
"We have no other choice." He said.
I grabbed Hailey's shaking arm and began pulling her with me. The two boys followed closely behind. When we got to the meadow, I think they were still too shocked to take in the beauty of their surroundings.
"Dean is going to say something at the tree and all we have to do is run through it." I explained.
"Are you crazy?!" Mitch yelled.
"You're going to have to trust us if you want to live through to tomorrow." Dean said firmly.
Jake gulped and he and Mitch nodded their heads. Hailey was still frozen in shock and fear. I wasn't surprised.
Dean said the words and I jumped through, pulling Hailey with me. I could see Mitch and Jake follow closely behind.
