"Yo, Liu Liu," Dr. Holt called, Yi sighed and walked over to him. She never liked the nicknames he gave her. "You have another patient, should be easy to take care of, although it's another filthy devil."
Yi sighed once more, there was nothing wrong with Eldians yet every other Marleyan acted that way. She just didn't see why they hated the Eldians for crimes their ancestors committed two thousand years ago. "Yes sit." she answered obediently. From her years being a nurse she learned that a nurse always had to obey the doctor and that there was no way that she could ever be as smart as one. Of course, she tried to be a doctor, it's just that medical schools rarely accepted women, and it didn't help that she was one of the few people of Eastern descent in the country.
Dr. Holt handed her a clipboard with the patient's information.
Name: Eren Kruger
Age: 19
Height: 183 cm
DOB: March 30, 835
Blood Type: --
Parents: --
"Eren Kruger..." Yi said to herself. She continued to read his information, a lot was missing which meant that she had to take a lot of tests. "He's only nineteen and already sent to war huh?" She always felt bad for her Eldian soldiers, they were put on the battlefield and were treated like pigs. At least he wasn't one of the poor Eldians that were turned into mindless titans for the sake of the war. All of the fighting and conquering that Marley was doing disgusted Yi. What gave them the right to wander into another country's territory and claim it for themselves? There was no point in world domination.
Yi arrived at the room with several beds lined up in rows. They were a small and understaffed hospital, it was unheard of for a patient to have their own room. She walked down the rows of beds until she reached the correct one.
"Eren Kruger?" she asked. He looked miserable, he had seen far too much horror in the battlefield at such a young age. His hair was long, a little past his shoulders, he had a bandage wrapped around his head covering his left eye. A knot in his pant leg stood in place of where his left leg should have been, he had a thin beard growing.
"Yes." he answered stoically. He looked Yi up and down and turned away. His expression never changing and unimpressed.
Yi held out her hand, "My name is Ying but you can call me Yi and I'll be your nurse until you leave." Eren just looked at her hand and stayed silent. It was okay, she was used to the cold treatment from Eldian soldiers. Of course she couldn't blame them, they were taught to resent themselves which led them to resent their oppressors for carelessly sacrificing their lives. She had many patients who were like this, they would eventually grow to her.
Yi's hand fell and she put on a warm smile, "I need to take some blood from you is that alright?" Eren just nodded and took off his jacket and unbuttoned his shirt. "Oh, you don't need to-" But his shirt was already halfway unbuttoned. She was surprised to see that he was very muscular underneath. Soldiers were fit but losing a leg and being bed ridden for a few weeks was bound to change your body. Eren caught her staring and scoffed. Yi looked away from his chest and took out a syringe.
She stuck it into a vein and drew blood and transferred it into a vial. "Thank you," she said as she capped the tube and cleaned his arm. Eren just grunted in acknowledgement and turned away from her.
The day was finally over for Yi and she got to go back home. She gave Eren's bloodwork to his doctors and they examined it, confirming that he was in fact, Eldian. Every week she made a detour and headed towards the interment zone. Marleyans weren't allowed to go there unless they had special permission but the guards didn't really care.
"You're back again?" the guard, Armie, said. She smiled and nodded, "I don't know why you keep coming here for them, they're just Eldians." he opened the gate for her. It was a smaller, secret entrance where some Marleyans used to sneak into the internment zone for whatever reasons.
"I like to help them, even if we aren't supposed to like them they're still human." she answered.
Armie laughed, "Yi, you don't need to do any more kind acts, you're already a saint!" he patted her back.
"Oh it's nothing like that," she denied and gave him a warm smile, showing her dimples.
"Oh my gosh Yi just marry me please!" Armie said. It was no secret that men all over Marley admired her beauty and kindness. Being Eastern, she possessed a beauty they found exotic and different. Of course she rejected all of them but that didn't stop them. She always tried her best to be kind to them but sometimes, she just couldn't. Fetishization did help her occasionally with Armie sneaking her into the camp and her getting discounts for many loaves of bread from the baker boy who worked a few blocks away from the hospital.
"Oh Armie, you know that I already have a fiancé!" she said playfully.
"But I never see him! Bring him to me and we'll fight for your hand in marriage." Armie challenged.
Yi plastered a smile on her face. The excuse she used for rejecting men's advances was always that she had a fiancé who was a soldier. "You know that he's on the battlefield. He's an important commander."
"Who is he, Magath?" Armie joked.
"Yeah."
Armie stopped smiling, "Huh?"
"I'm just kidding!" Yi continued on her way until she reached the center where most people were. An old woman sat by the fountain, Yi approached her, "Hello Mrs. Hansen, how is your son?" she handed the old woman a loaf of bread from her bag.
Mrs. Hansen accepted it gratefully, "He's alright, he wants to be a warrior candidate!" Yi smiled and nodded, she always felt bad especially for the warrior candidates, they were all young children hoping to become honorary Marleyans and inherit one of the titans.
"That's great! I'm certain that he will be successful!" Yi lied. Mrs. Hansen's son would most likely die in the battlefield, he was a weak boy so he stood no chance.
She moved on from the old lady, "YIIIIIIII!!" a high pitched voice screamed. Yi turned around to see Gabi, Falco, Zofia, and Udo running towards her. They loved it whenever she visited because she always brought them sweets.
"Hi!" she said. She smiled and looked at the four of them, hiding her bag behind her.
"Did you bring it?" Gabi asked.
"Hmm bring what?" Yi played dumb.
"You know what I'm talking about!" Gabi said.
Yi scrunched her nose and smiled. She reached into the bag and handed each of the kids a few pieces of candy, "Yess! Thank you Yi!" Falco said. The kids stuffed the candies down their mouths.
"Where did you get this?" Zofia asked.
"She must have another secret admirer at the candy shop." Udo suggested. He wasn't wrong. A young man recently became employed at a nearby candy shop and fell for Yi when he first saw her.
"Run along now, go play." Yi said. The kids ran off to play as she continued to distribute bread.
A blonde man with broad shoulders walked up to her, "Thank you." he said.
"For what Reiner?" she asked.
"For helping all of us out. You also cheered Gabi up. She's been really nervous about her deployment." Reiner said. They were all just twelve years old and they were already being sent off to the battlefield. A twelve year old should be learning algebra, not fighting wars for a country that didn't even accept them.
Yi looked up at the much taller man, "Was it bad there?"
He looked down, "Yes. It was...bad." He instantly felt shame. He was only a child, no older than Gabi when he first killed. The truth was, the devils of Paradis weren't all bad. They gave him a home and friends. If only he could trick himself into thinking they were all horrible, then maybe the pain would go away.
So here is the first chapter! Let me know what you think!
