Ichigo was going through the Senkaimon when suddenly he loses his memories and gets sent back to the past with his powers. The only ones who didn't forget anything were Shiro and Zangetsu who decided to not let Ichigo get involved with the soul reapers this time which got even more convenient when the place they end up in was at a human orphanage. Though the two spirits feel guilty for keeping the 10 year old Ichigo separated from his sisters Karin and Yuzu, they don't want to risk getting involved into some life threatening situation again any time soon.
However, as Ichigo's rotten luck for getting into trouble would have it (according to Shiro), he gets taken in by the hidden Quincy organization and meets Ywach due to his tremendous spiritual energy. To Ywach's surprise he has the pleasure to encounter both his counter part Zangetsu and the rude Hollow Shiro who are behaving - quite frankly - like Ichigo's Godparents or brothers instead of tag-alongs.
As such, while getting reacquainted with his Soul reaper and Hollow powers he learns Quincy techniques with other kids who had the pleasant gift to see hollows. Needless to say Ichigo sucks at precision and blew up the training rounds not once, not twice, not five times! But at least a 100 times over the years he was with them!
