School was nothing like the schools in Hawaii. Unlike the high school in Brownsville, her high school back in Honolulu was more big and the grade levels were different. "Is it Lee or Lay-lani?", the teacher asked.
"Lay-lani", Leilani corrected them.

"Oh, Lay-lani. Thanks for reminding me".

As the teacher continued to take attendance, she overheard a boy with dirty blonde hair sitting across from her face his Peter something to a dark-skinned boy and they giggled. She didn't quite hear what was being said, but she had a feeling it was rude.

The dark-skinned boy snickered. "Ricky, Bradley, cut the chit-chat back there", they teacher ordered. She rolled her eyes at them, knowing that she's dealt with worse insensitive comments about her. "Is this your first day?", an African-American girl, who sat next to her, asked.

"Yeah"

"Well, all I'll say is don't worry, the first day is weird for everyone. Once you get used to it, it's not that bad".

"Thanks", she gave a small smile.

"I'm Dina", the girl held out her hand.

"Nice to meet you", Leilani shook her hand.

From her interaction with Dina, she seemed to be another decent person in that town compared to most of the kids that Leilani came across. She wasn't exactly sure how Noa's first day was going, but when she saw him in the hallway, she saw that he was talking to another boy. Leilani was able to catch up with Stanley at lunch and spent the lunch period telling him about stuff such as the things she liked and didn't like about the school. "I've had like a few teachers mispronounce my name. It can get a little annoying after a while", she said to him.

"I understand that", he nodded. "I mean, it is pretty fancy-sounding name".

"Gee, thanks", she said sarcastically.

"Come on, you know I mean in a good way. It's okay to have a name different from others. Different can be good sometimes, right?"

"Yeah"

"If anything, I'd say it's a beautiful name"

"Thanks", she smiled, slightly showing her dimples. He found that to be another part of her that was beautiful. It was almost rare to find someone who somewhat liked the same things that he did. To him, she, overall, had a pretty nice aura.

After school, Stanley offered Leilani a ride and they rode around in his dad's car. When they both made it home, Leilani sat with Stanley on his front porch once she finished her homework and continued to strum her ukulele. "How long have you had that ukulele?", asked Stanley.

"Since I was 10. My grandfather gave it to me for a birthday present", she replied. Then, she proceeded to play Anna Kendrick's "Cups" and Stanley continued to sit beside her and listen.

"There's my friend, Syd", Stanley pointed out to the pixie-haired brunette girl that was walking by. Leilani stopped playing her ukulele and put it in her case. "Aren't you going to put on shoes first?", she asked him, pointing out that he was barefoot. "No", he shrugged. She followed Stanley as he walked up to Syd.
"My legs fell asleep. One sec", he said before stretching his right leg. Syd stood awkwardly and looked at Leilani.

"I'm Leilani, by the way", Leilani said.

"Syd", she said.

"Do you mind if we walk with you?", Stanley asked Syd.

"Sure", said Syd. Stanley, Syd, and Leilani walked together down the street. "You okay?", Syd asked, looking down at Stanley's bare feet.

"Shoes. Who needs 'em?", he grinned. Leilani chuckled to herself and slightly shook her head.

"So, bloodwitch, am I right?", Stanley asked.

"What?"

"Bloodwitch. Do you like their music?"

"That sounds like a terrible name for a band"

"No, perfect", he said.

"They probably sound like shit"

"I think they sound good", Leilani added.

"Well, I mean, I have them on vinyl, limited edition. You could come over and we could listen sometime", Stanley suggested.

"Oh.", Syd said.

"We could get high"

"Yeah, maybe"

"I mean, you don't have to. We just-we just live so close and we've never hung out before".

"No, I guess we haven't, but sure. Yeah, maybe we should", syd said.

"Cool, let me know"

Stanley and Leilani started to walk off. He turned around, put his sunglasses on, and gave a bow. "What a world we live in, Sydney", he said.

~~~~~~~
"How come you and Syd don't talk to each other that much?", Leilani asked him as they sat on the couch in his basement.
"Well, her dad killed himself last spring so she was dealing with a lot", he explained.
"Oh, that sucks", she responded sympathetically.
"Yeah", he said. "Once you get to know her, she's pretty cool"
She looked at her phone and saw that it read 8:26pm. "Shoot, I have to get home", Leilani said as she started to get herself together and put her jacket on. "Already?", Stanley asked.
"Yeah. I can't miss dinner".
"I understand. I wish you could stay"
"Me too", she said. Stanley's basement became one of the places that she enjoyed hanging out at after school. It could be because there was something about Stanley that made her feel comfortable. He walked with her to the front porch.
"So I'll catch you tomorrow?", the curly-haired boy asked.
"Yeah. I'll catch you tomorrow"
Before she walked off, she turned around and hugged him. She wasn't exactly sure why she did it, but in a way, it was her way of showing him that she officially considered him as a friend. He hugged her back, smelling the whiff of vanilla perfume on her clothes. Then, they broke apart and she walked back to her house. As he watched her walk away, part of him started to realize that maybe he liked her more than just as a friend.
