That morning, Leilani went downstairs to her brothers and sisters eating breakfast and her parents getting ready for work. Her dad was a architect while her mom worked as a pediatrician. "Leilani, I have to work a late shift tonight so can you watch Nina after school?", asked Keala.
"Why can't Noa or Keanu watch her?", Leilani asked.
"Keanu is staying over at a friends house and Noa has a club meeting", she explained.
"Well, I'm supposed to meet up with Stanley after school"
"Which is why you can cancel", replied Keala. "Now, eat your toast. It's too early to be arguing". Leilani didn't really mind spending time with Nina, (even though she annoyed her at times) but at the same time, it was a little tough to cancel plans to watch her.
After getting ready for school, she went over to Stanley's and hitched a ride from him. He blasted Bloodwitch's "Hey Little Girl" from the radio. "My mom's making me watch my sister after school", Leilani told him. "Oh. That's fine because I have work around that time, anyway", he said.
"Where do you work?"
"Beaver Valley Bowl. It's like right down the street"
"Well, maybe I can swing by sometime"
"I would like that"
While they were driving, they spotted Syd walking down the street. Stanley slowly drove up to her and stopped the car. "Hey, Syd", he greeted. He lowered down the window, but the window was lowering down really slowly. Leilani sat awkwardly and slightly grinned as Stanley's car window slowly rolled down. It was kind of obvious that his dad's car was old. "Are you going to school?", he asked her.
"Yeah", she replied.
"Ok, we are too", he said. He offered a ride and she got in. Leilani moved to the back seat. "Can you believe that some people are already asking asking dates to homecoming?", he asked her as he continued driving.
"So stupid. It's so far away", Syd said.
"Yeah, totally. Super far, like a whole week", he said before looking through the rear view window. "Lan, who are you asking to homecoming?".
"I'm not sure yet", said Leilani. She hadn't really been thinking about the homecoming dance that much. It wasn't that she wasn't interested, but it was because there were other things on her mind like school and learning to adjust to a new environment.

After school, Keala texted and told her that Leilani's aunt Carla offered to watch Nina, so she decided to visit Stanley at the bowling alley for a while.
"Do you have a spirit animal?", Leilani asked him."A what?", he asked.
"A spirit animal"
It was one of the only questions she could think of. Spirit animals may have been a random thing to talk about to most people, but they were something that she personally believed in sometimes. "Oh. I guess I would say a jellyfish", Stanley said.
"How so?"
"They rely on their own instincts, they're unafraid of facing any challenges, and they live free of any stress", he explained.
"I get what you mean"
"How about you?"
"I'd say a sea turtle because they symbolize wisdom and determination".
"Sounds legit"
She spotted syd entering the bowling alley. "Hey, Syd", Leilani said.
"Hey", Syd replied before turning to Stanley. "I need to borrow your car. Not for long, just like an hour"
