The week went by quickly. Her mom was definitely upset she didn't buy groceries on Monday, and instead unpacked their things. And then she got upset because despite their fridge now stocked with food, there was nothing to eat quickly—which Lorena was a fan of doing. And a completely different note, there was a certain someone who was missing from school.
She didn't want to press anyone with questions, she was a fan of playing the 'don't care about anything' card but also being extremely curious and borderline nosy. It was just extremely hard to miss considering his strange behavior in Biology. Lux tried not to think about it too much, an attempt to distract herself from it by trying to hold a conversation with Jessica.
"What do you guys think?" Eric asked.
She shared a look with Bella. Lux was enjoying spending time with Bella, it was easy to since they lived so close and saw each other so often. And Lux had always been a fan of her own space which was good since so did Bella. It was easy to fall into a routine of working on homework together. Bella would sit on Lux's window seat and read a story while the other would do the same on her bed. It wasn't a daily thing, they'd just met after all but the past week Bella had come over twice. Lux hadn't gone to her place yet, no reason in particular and maybe she'd do so soon but with still unpacking things she had no reason to leave.
"About what?" Lux asked looking to Eric and Mike who seemed dumbfounded that they hadn't been paying attention. "La Push baby, you in?"
"Should I know what that is?" She asked, looking at the others for any sort of answer. Angela sighed, pushing her glasses further up the bridge of her nose, "They mean La Push beach. Surfing."
"Come on girl, you wanna go?" Mike asked. No, she very much did not. By the cold weather in Forks she doubted the beaches around the area would be any different and if they'd be accompanied by sea breeze it'd only make it a hundred times worse.
"You should come, it's fun," Bella added, the entire group trying to get her to join.
By the time Biology rolled around she found herself staring at the empty seat in front of her. She'd learned her Biology partner was Nick Wylde, a boy big on hunting and purchasing fishing wire. He'd been absent due to a fishing hook caught on his ear and it took too long to remove. She could tell they'd have absolutely nothing in common, considering she'd never gone hunting or fishing and that seemed to be all he talked about.
Bella's partner was nowhere to be seen. She'd seen Edward the first day only and even then her sight on him was limited. There was the very brief moment in the library where she tuned in on Jessica's rundown of the school groups, and then in this very class. They hadn't exchanged glances or passed by in the hall, simply just the short two encounters. And maybe it was because his presence was so strong—similar like for all of his family as well—but it was hard to miss when he was not around.
She wondered why he'd just left. It seemed as everyone else didn't even bat an eye, like it was normal behavior for him to just disappear, but the split second where she'd seen him tense up and grip his desk like his life depended on it, it didn't seem normal. At least not normal in her eyes.
The class had also been going by insanely slow, probably because she had no reason to zone out or nothing to distract herself. If she thought about Nick too long she'd think about the camouflage hoodie he wore and camouflage hat that clashed with the hoodie. He also had a pick in his mouth, like he still had food stuck in between his teeth. He had one in everyday, and his boots always left a track of mud on the white lament floor. He would push his chair away from the desk and rest his dirty shoe on top until Mr. Molina would call him out on it.
To say the rest of her first week at school had gone by quickly but also with lack of excitement. She looked down at the paper Mr. Molina passed, a permission slip to visit some green house. She'd most likely forge her mom's signature since there'd be no time for her mom to sign.
This past week she'd barely seen her. It was a mix of training and new work jitters that made her mom be gone for so long. When the news came months ago about the switch, Lux was devastated, she still was actually, it was something she didn't think she'd be getting over anytime soon. Being trapped in a different state with her mom was not something she was looking forward to.
The strained relationship between the two was the cause of a long mixture of insecurities, childhood trauma, and high expectations. It didn't help her mom would leave to the hospital bright and early and return late at night. When she was relocated to Port Angeles, Lux was at least a little thrilled to still be living in the city, except her mom was tired of the city and wanted to move somewhere more local and more of a community. Maybe she didn't think of the struggle it'd be for them to fit in to a town that knew each other for generations and their inclusivity. Of course she didn't have to think about it too much when she drove an hour to Port Angeles and an hour back everyday she had very little time to care about the town.
Her house was quiet, something she'd grown used to. Wherever they occupied there was a sense of strangeness to it. A lack of connection to their home despite the Knick knacks and family pictures. It was a house that was just there to hold a roof over their head. It wasn't to hold memories or any sort of conversations.
In fact she barely spoke to her mom, it was constant:
"There's nothing cooked."
"Comb your hair, it's a mess."
"I'm leaving for work, don't wait up."
"Are you still not speaking to me?"
"Fine, I was just going to tell you you're gaining the winter fat."
"Grow up Lux, it wouldn't have mattered if we stayed or didn't."
