8. Nonsense and insensibility
From the look on the outside, Grim and Grimmer's bank looked a lot like the white house. Pillars and separate long wings edging out, except this bank had steps leading up to it and was colored more of a stylized gray. Sid walked through the marble floor reception to the main halls, where several offices on either side stood firm against the main front desk. A crystal chandelier hung over the room while Sid walked up with the sack of gold.
"state your business" a bug eyed accountant spoke while writing details in a large black tome.
"I'm here for king Lucifer" Sid stood humble.
"withdrawal or deposit?" the accountant asked.
"depositing" Sid placed the sack of gold on the front desk.
"follow me please." The accountant led Sid around back deeper into the bank. Down several flights of stairs, the two same to a golden door on a large black wall underground. The accountant opened the door to reveal a much larger chasm filled with a mountain of gold, silver, jewels, and treasures of untold value.
"is this it?" Sid awed over the mound of moolah.
"yes. Inheritance from the royal family. So much he needs something to guard it all. Hope you aren't afraid of snakes" the accountant led Sid into the chamber.
"what, me?. no. why?" Sid stepped into the chasm while the accountant closed the door behind him. Torchlights glinted off the treasure while Sid stepped further in with caution. Suddenly, Sid heard a tumbling shower of coins and clanging metal behind him before turning to see a giant red snake about as long and as large as a freight train.
"a new treat I see" the snake hissed at eye level with his guest with a golden yellow gaze.
"I hope you're talking about the money" Sid held up the sack of gold.
"right, the money" the snake stared into Sid's glasses.
"I was just dumping this off for your master" Sid started to talk.
"you work for the king?" the snake tilted its head slightly.
"is that so hard to believe?" Sid raised an eyebrow.
"maybe. Most demons would be tempted to have a pick of some of this treasure. Hopefully you will not make the same mistakes as they" the snake slithered around Sid at a distance, its movement digging up a large shining red ruby.
"oooooo" Sid gazed at the gem.
"what was that?" the snake turned to Sid.
"I mean ohhh, this bag is very heavy. I'm going to empty it all out now" Sid shook out the gold pieces from the sack.
"a wise decision" the snake stood up taller.
"you know, Luci is looking for a new guard for this place" Sid called out the snake.
"what?" the serpent looked down.
"yeah, I think his name's Diversion" Sid waved around his hands.
"and where would this Diversion be now?" the snake lowered himself back to Sid's level.
"right behind you" Sid pointed a finger to behind the snake, causing it to look back while Sid snatched up the ruby and dashed off for the golden door.
"heathen!!" the snake turned back too late and cursed his guest before slithering back into his golden hill. Sid scaled the stairs to emerge back out to the front halls, his prize intact.
"did you find what you were looking for, sir?" the accountant continued writing.
"oh yes, thanks" Sid whisked out of the front doors back into the city. soon he returned to the citadel, stashing the ruby in his briefcase, thinking of what he could use it for.
