27. An imperfect world

Across town, Lucifer was on the hunt. Several times he had performed the exact same routine: he would find a group of small scale gangsters in their cesspit, they would try to do some damage to him, he would easily defeat them, then they would give him the necessary information he needed to track down the immortal Stingy Jack. In a place like Hell, a gem encrusted cup would be worth a lot among the greedy souls of the realm. His quest for answers had taken him all the way across town, from the markets to the ganglands to the suburbs, but whenever he came close, the chalice that was Jack seemed to deceive him. 

The weapons he had amassed indeed did damage to his assailants, but brute force would not be enough to find Jack. Besides informants, Lucifer also had to rely on the immortal trail, a scent that was endemic specifically to an immortal. Jack himself carried a variant of this scent, as he was still alive and human originally, just currently in cup form. Every time the trail seemed to close, Jack was nowhere to be found, just a bunch of smashed heads and faces to punch. The final group of demons bundled up in some run down part of town that Lucifer came to experience the same fate as those that came before them in Lucifer's scavenger hunt, only this time, they had worthwhile information. 

They said they sold the chalice to a Purgatorian for a satchel of cut blood diamonds. The immortal trail was still fresh, so for now at least, Jack had not been melted down into a chain or something other. Lucifer ploughed his way across Hell, following the trail, which smelt of strong alcohol with a hint of body odor. The trail ended at the convent of Our Ladies of Spiritual Damnation, meaning once again Lucifer had to travel to the human world to find Jack, no matter how ticked the whole experience had made him thus far.
