18. Only tomorrow

With a general haze in his eyes, Sid awoke in Satan's former master bedroom suffering one of his most infamous hangovers. He had no recollection of any events other than slipping into the contraband room of the library across town. Sid rose from the bed rubbing his sore face and slugged around the room for the next ten minutes, regaining most of his consciousness in the process. If he had been alive in the human world, the amount of alcohol and drugs he had consumed the day before would have probably killed him, but not in a realm where the dead must live through the pain.

Giving his clothes a quick treatment with an ironing board, Sid began to feel refreshed for the day ahead. He brushed across the hallway to Lucifer's office, but found the room empty and his boss nowhere to be seen. Judging it to be serious business, Sid enjoyed the unhindered peace and quiet of the vacated top floor. He then opened all the windows in the offices and his refurbished office home.

Sid looked out onto the busy city below and soon spotted a surprising sight: Carlos down on the steps outside as usual. Sid got a thought and decided to put his not so devious plan into action. Leaving a note on the table in Lucifer's office, Sid walked out from the floor and into the elevator. The note read that he was taking a personal day, which was about to get even more personal. On the steps, Sid strolled past the busy suits and clerks darting in and out of the building to find his quarry.

"hey Carlos" Sid stood by.

"oh, hey" Carlos looked behind him to see a familiar face.

"so, I was wondering if maybe, and don't get me wrong, but maybe you might want to go out some time" Sid began to drawl nervously.

"is that so?" Carlos raised an eyebrow.

"well, yeah, but only if you were up for it, because it's perfectly fine if you aren't" Sid continued.

"I didn't think you were much of the partying type" Carlos gave a smile.

"well...." Sid remained fumbled.

"alright. the Esco-bar, in the Fallen, seven. If you want to have a good time, I'll see you there" Carlos closed his sketchbook and walked off into the city.

"great, seven it is" Sid smiled, internally jumping for joy. Back inside at his home in the citadel, Sid was preparing for the coming evening, but kept seeing certain visions and flashes of bright light. He could hear distant booms coming from nowhere but inside his head. After curling up on the double bed in fear, Sid decided there was only one thing he could do. taking the tramway, Sid traversed town to the hospital for a date with the doctor.

"Doc?" Sid's voice came from behind the door of Saul's office.

"oh, look who showed up. Do not worry, I have a starting block and a pair of shoes if you want to run out of our sessions again" Saul stood at the door, opening it slightly.

"no, I just wanted a quick talk if you don't mind" Sid digressed.

"come on in then...so tell me what is bothering you" Saul opened the door fully and led Sid to the lounger, closing the door behind him.

"same old, same old. I just wanted your advice" Sid sat down.

"then you have come to the right place" Saul smiled while looking down at his clipboard.

"you see, I've got a date tonight, and I'm excited, really I am, but I just keep seeing these nightmares from Blood Moon Day. Now with Carlos into it, I don't know what to do" Sid swerved around and spoke.

"the mind is a very powerful thing, but it is also very fragile. What you need to do is try looking on the bright side a little more, try thinking of the positives, and finally have a good time. You do not seem to allow yourself the time to relax, but it is never too late to start" the doctor elaborated.

"I know. That's why I took the day off today, because this guy seems very nice and I just want to get to know him some more" Sid continued.

"then go with your gut" Saul interjected.

"you think so?" Sid said hopefully.

"I know so, now off with you. have fun" the doctor opened the door gently to allow Sid to leave in his own time.

"thanks doc" Sid praised before leaving.

"don't thank me yet" Saul closed the door behind Sid. The secretary now realized that the only person who was holding him back was himself, and there was no use in making more obstacles for himself. It was time for him to put the past in the past and move on to see what the future would bring, a future that was already beginning.
