Zak POV
"And that's the plan for this year's play!" Exclaimed the leader of the drama club over the announcements. "Come sign up to audition on the board near the office!"
I was never a theater kid, but my mom had started to feel like I spent too much time playing video games and that I should get out more. She was making me join a club.
My sister Sam had pointed out that I was a pretty good actor. And I figured I could audition, not get the role or get a minor roll, and my mom would drop this whole thing.
So as soon as lunch came around, I went to the sign up sheet and wrote my name down. I grabbed one of the papers. Small slips of paper with lines for different major characters in the play to practice and perform at the audition.
Our school was performing Hamilton. I decided to audition for the role of Alexander Hamilton himself. Surely everyone would be going for that role right? It would be difficult to land a role as the main character, and if I didn't try it wouldn't be too hard.
Two weeks passed until the day of the audition. I was ready.
I sat down in one of the comfortable seats and waited. 3 people were called before me, but then I was called up to stage.
I took a deep breath.
"I am not throwing away my shot. I am not throwing away my shot! Hey yo I'm just like my country, I'm young, scrappy, and hungry, and I am not throwing away my shot." I seemed to forget my plans to make my audition fail and got lost in the lines I knew so well.
I turned on my heel. "Imma get a scholarship to kings college. I probably shouldn't brag but dag I amaze and astonish."
"The problem is I got a lot of brains but no polish, I gotta holler just to be heard. With every word I drop knowledge. I'm a diamond in the rough a shiny piece of coal. Tryna teach my goal, my power of speech: Unimpeachable." I took a deep breath and continued.
"Only nineteen but my mind is older, these new york city streets get colder I shoulder. Every burden every disadvantage, I've learned to manage I don't have a gun to brandish. I walk these streets famished."
"The plan is to fan this spark into a flame. But damn it's getting dark so let me spell out the name. I am the AL EX AN D ER we are meant to be."
"A colony that runs independently, meanwhile britain keeps shitting on us endlessly. Essentially, they tax us relentlessly, while king George turns around and runs a spending spree. He ain't never gonna set his descendants free. So there will be a revolution in this century."
"Enter me he says in parentheses. Don't be shocked when your history book mentions me. I will lay down my life if it sets us free. Eventually you'll see my ascendancy."
"And I am not throwing away my shot. I am not throwing away my shot. Hey yo I'm just like my country I'm young scrappy and hungry. And I'm not throwing away my shot. It's time to take a shot!" I exclaimed finally. I was heaving.
So much for a bad audition. I thought. The audience clapped loudly.
I returned to my seat. I didn't have to be there anymore but I was curious.
The most interesting thing was when a guy auditioned for the part of Eliza Schuyler. He had beautiful golden brown hair. His stunning emerald green eyes scanned the crowd anxiously. Then he started to sing.
"Boy you got me helpless. Look into your eyes and the sky's the limit. I'm helpless. Down for the count and I'm drowning in them." He had a beautiful voice that echoed the room and gave me chills.
