Zak POV
"Darrrryyyyylllll I'm bored! Do we really have to do this?" I groaned.
Darryl sighed, glancing up from the paper he was glueing down the poster board. "Yes Zak. It's your fault you decided to put it off for this long. You're just lucky I decided to help."
"But I don't wanna! Let's just go home and play Minecraft." I offered.
"No Zak. Now help me glue this down." He nodded toward the half done science project on the desk.
Darryl had forced me to stay after to work on my project, knowing I wouldn't get it done at home, and decided to help me finish it.
I stood up from the desk I was sitting on and was walking toward Darryl when a voice came over the intercom.
"Any remaining students or teachers left in the school, there is a shooter in the area. Please lock yourself and anyone up in the nearest classroom and await further instruction. Stay safe."
I stopped and glanced toward the open door. Darryl and I shared a single glance that communicated everything in that moment.
I sprinted to the door and pushed it closed, quickly locking it. Darryl stood and shut the blinds. I turned off the lights and Darryl and I went and crouched in the corner.
We stayed silent but the anxiety between us was shared with nervous glances and shaking hands.
The unfortunate thing was that the teacher had left the classroom a bit before the announcement to go make copies, so Darryl and I were stuck here. Alone and without an adult.
"Darryl? I'm scared." I whispered as quietly as possible.
There was a short silence, but then came his hushed reply. "Me too Muffin. But it will be okay. They just said near, not actually here. I'm sure we'll be fine."
I relaxed slightly. Although, his words couldn't seem to calm my beating heart or shaking body.
"Darryl, could I have a hug?" There was no response except for a pair of warm comforting arms wrapping around me.
We stayed like that for a while. I had calmed down immensely just by being hugged by Darryl. That is, until I heard a gunshot. Then another. Then another. Then an eerie silence.
Darryl's hand shot to his mouth. Tears stung my eyes.
"Those shots sounded close, like in the hallways…" Darryl muttered in barely a whisper.
I curled up and buried my face in Darryl's shoulder. The tears flowed out like a waterfall, creating a wet spot on Darryl's hoodie.
"No no no no muffin don't cry. Please don't cry, it will be okay. I'm right here with you and we're both still safe." Darryl's voice quavered as he spoke. I could tell that he was terrified and was just staying strong for me. It sent a sharp pain through my heart. Like a pin in a pincushion.
The tears didn't stop, in fact, they came faster. Two more gunshots were fired and Darryl gave in and started crying into my shoulder as well.
We stayed there for what seemed like hours, and probably was, when suddenly the doorknob jiggled. Darryl and I both stopped crying instantly.
There was muttering outside the door.
"It's the only other door shut and locked in this hallway, there got to be someone in there." A gruff voice grunted.
"Yeah, but is it really worth it breaking into a room for another 1 or two hostages?" Another voice replied.
"Yes! Have you not seen Die Hard? You don't know who is hiding in the rooms. We need everyone." The original voice argued.
