15.my kind of woman

for once, the alarm didn't wake olivia up, but her pure excitement from the day ahead. it had been three days since emily finally agreed to give them a chance and since than olivia could help but wake up a little earlier than usual, just in case emily wanted to make impromptu plans. she knew probably wouldn't, but her movie driven mind couldn't help but envision the dream sequence of romcom scenarios she'd insert them into at 7am. her lips twitched into a small smile at the thought as she finished packing up her bag before heading out, emily and the elevator already waiting for. had she always been this charming?
"good morning" emily spoke first, offering her a smile and pressing the button for the lobby as she quickly glanced over the other girls outfit. her heart pattered, 'she's wearing the earrings i got her'
"good morning, thanks for waiting for me by the way" she returned the smile, leaning into the wall behind her, head tilting towards emily "are we still on for dinner after work today?"
"of course, why wouldn't we be?" emily questioned, positioning herself to mirror olivia, the two of them now staring at each other with twinkling eyes
olivia shrugged and inched a bit closer "just making sure em"
and with that the doors opened, both girls jumping a bit at the ruined moment before olivia bid her goodbye, stepping out and making her way to the bus stop as her car was currently getting repaired, emily staying back as the elevator dragged her to the garage.
══════════════════════════
by the time their scheduled meet up time rolled around, olivia had lived through 24 scenarios of how it would work it— would emily sit next to her instead of in front of her like she usually did? would they still be sharing a cupcake? would they even be getting a cupcake? maybe emily would actually refuse to let olivia pay this time, although olivia herself was more than happy to pay for the both of them. would emily be okay with her wanting to hold hands? she knows the agent wasn't fond of major pda but was fingers locking together that extravagant? god she hoped not, her skin had been basically itching for the contact since that night so many months ago.
she got there first, saving them a table at the window as they always did, smiling and sitting up a bit when she saw her nearing. should she stand up? no, that's weird. should she reach for a hug? no, they normally only hugged goodbye. would emily still want to hug? oh god, was she going to be deprived of that too? it was only when emily placed her hand onto her own when she blinked, looking to find emily had already entered and sat in front of her, apparently had been for a bit now.
"where'd you go?". emily had noticed this about her. she would doze off and seemingly be lost in her own head until someone pulled her out. it was cute.
olivia cleared her throat, shaking her head lightly as if she was clearing a mental etch-a-sketch "just.... i was thinking. doesn't matter, how are you?", suppressing a frown as the warm touch of her lover retracted
"good, stressed but when am i not" she chuckled "how are you? how's the big project coming along?"
"it's going well, mostly finished with the design. just need a few more minor details and than we can get to finalizing and sending it off"
they talked a bit more before emily got up to order for them, refusing to let olivia pay just as she suspected. she couldn't help her lingering eyes as she walked away. once back, they continued on with their conversation about olivia's newest project at work and how annoying some of her teammates were, emily teasing she should use the "talking stick" system, a thought olivia couldn't deny she had thought of before.
emily pretended not to notice olivias fingers twitching on the table, as if beckoning for emily to grasp them in her own. and she wanted to, badly, yet a part of her held on to the reins, keeping her hands to herself much to olivia's dismay.
as their dinner neared an end, olivia selfishly felt disappointment rear its head. of course she knew things weren't going to suddenly change between them, they weren't going to be parading through the town in a musical number about young love, they were still new to this. she still had to show emily that no one was out to hurt them, this wasn't the beginning to a romantic drama with a tragic ending, yet untouched hints of wanting affection still tugged at her heart. she had wished for a least an attempt from the other's end, yet even as they made their way to emily's car it looked as though whatever clues left had been dropped at the door. as they buckled up and made their way back home, sat in comfortable silence with the radio filling it in, emily placed her hand on the middle console.
at first olivia thought nothing of it, the other often drove one handed, until emily tapped at the plastic beneath her fingers for a moment before flipping her palm upward, as of leaving her palm open for olivia's hand and her hand only. they both smiled to themselves as olivia silently slipped her hand into the spot, slotting her fingers between the others.
"you didn't think i was gonna leave you hanging. did you?" emily mused, turning to glance at the smaller girls rose cheeks as they waited at the light.
"so you did see my hints"
"of course i did, i'm in the fbi" she laughed, turning her attention back to the road as the light turned green. olivia could only reply with huffing chuckle, head leaning back against the seat.
emily rubbed her thumb with her own.

it was only when emily had to park that they pulled apart, both hands quickly finding each other again as they walked towards the elevator. olivia slightly leaned into emily as they waited in the lift, enjoying the smile emily tried (and failed) at hiding at the small yet heart warming action. she liked having this effect on her, a part of secretly wished she'd be the only to ever see it. as they neared the 9th floor olivia finally spoke up. "thank you for dinner"
"thank you for not fighting me for the check this time" the older of the two chuckled, pulling back to look at olivia clearly, yearning to see the smile she knew was already there
"i wouldn't of won anyways"
as the doors opened emily gave her an apologetic look, stopping herself from reaching out and cupping olivia's check to stroke the pout away. she liked holding her face, it fit in her palm almost as perfectly as her hand. it was soft and as odd as it sounded she liked feeling her smile form beneath her finger tips. all those thoughts stopped however as she found something she much preferred to feel. a new, exciting feeling, a feeling they had both longed for.
olivia's lips meeting hers in a chaste, quick kiss.
it was emily's turn to blush now, olivia staring back at her with a smug, victorious smile.
"the doors are gonna close if you don't get out soon"
"as if you'd mind" and just like that her wit was back, leaning in for another soft kiss she had to physically pull herself out of before telling olivia good bye and slipping out the quickly closing doors, leaving a beaming olivia to think about the next 30 scenarios of running off to a far away place.
maybe commitment wasn't such a bad thing after all.
