We got in the car and the policeman drove us to the police station then waited for the man diving us to tell us to go inside. It was a couple minutes later when he finally said anything.
"Alrighty kiddos. Go ahead and hop outta the car and go inside. Either your mom is already here, or will be here any second now." He said looking back then smiling at us. "She's a good woman, you guys need to know that. She's just in the wrong place-"
"-at the wrong time we know." Jonathan finished the policeman's sentence.
"Right," The policeman muttered under his breath, glaring at my brother.
"Um, I mean of course we are grateful for your help and we'll be going inside right now!" I say, grabbing my brother and pushing him at the door.
"I'll make sure you two get inside before I leave the parking lot again. Cya!" The policeman said all cheery again.
I'm sure he was just trying to be nice right then, but all the switching sides from angry to joyful wasn't something I needed right at that moment. We walked inside in silence and were weary of all the cops around us. I saw a couple eating doughnuts or drinking coffee, others were standing around talking to other cops about whatever. But one particular cop caught my eye as we walked past her. It was a young woman, maybe in her early 30s or late 20s. She looked as we walked past and she stared at us from a corner of her eye while eating a blueberry bagel. I shivered when I saw her start to glare.
"Johnathon, walk faster!" I hissed at my brother.
Obediently he walked faster and soon we were in the main office where people waited. There were a couple policemen/women in the office and our mom sitting in a chair, looked as worried as she did the first time she was arrested for no apparent reason.
She saw us and said, "Oh thank the Heavens! I was so worried!" Then wrapped us in a bear hug.
I'm not the biggest fan of hugs, but because of what had happened earlier, I hugged her tighter than I ever had in my life. I felt like crying again too.
"I'm so sorry for what happened to your father you two..." She muffled in between tears.
"Mom, it's... it's not your fault." I say comfortably to her, as I wanted to cheer her up a little.
"Yea, it's not your fault mom. No one in the house knew what was going on until... until that very second when it was too late." My brother said, tearing up a little.
My brother never gets sad unless one of his family members or best friends dies. Even then he barely cries, but right now no one cared whether he cried or not.
