___________

It was getting later in the evening and a few people had left Midsummers. Saige and her friends danced their hearts out and hung out some after, but they dispersed to their families. John B and Sarah went to her family, Kiara went to her parents, and Pope was forced back to his grill by his dad. Apparently, he was never supposed to leave it. Oops.

Saige was with her parents and brother and as much fun as she had that night, she just wanted to be cuddled up to JJ under a blanket and fall asleep on his chest.

"Saige, did you see Rafe tonight? He looks so handsome! Maybe you should go say hi to him." Her mom suggested. Saige internally groaned at the idea of seeing him; she managed to avoid him the entire night. It helped that he was busy with the party all night and didn't have much time to make conversation with anybody.

"Yeah, I would rather go die in a hole," Saige said back. Her dad laughed at her words, making her mom roll her eyes.

"Saige, don't be that way! Rafe is a sweet boy-"

"Anyways!" Saige interrupted her mom, "I need some more water. Maybe I'll go find JJ, the not-crazy guy that I'm getting to know and is helping us around our house, and he will give me some." She got up from the table, not even taking her cup with her for a refill, and went to find a place to sit by herself and think. There was a secluded spot on the beach that had a beautiful view of the stars and the ocean. The gentle sound of the waves put Saige at peace. She sat in the sand and didn't care that her backside would be covered in it; she wouldn't wear that dress again any time soon.

Of course, her mind drifted off to JJ. They had come so far with each other. Really, they didn't meet that long ago. What if they never had?

"You look beautiful tonight, Saige."

"Get the hell away from me, Rafe." She didn't have to turn around to see who it was. It was an all too familiar voice she desperately tried to escape for so long.

"Chill, I'm not gonna mess with you. The party sucks and I needed to get away."

She still didn't turn to look at him. Rafe sat himself down beside her.

"You know, there are a few people back there who would murder you if they saw you messing with me. Watch your back."

Rafe ignored her. "Do you remember our first date?" He asked.

"Unfortunately."

"I was so nervous to pick you up. Figured you wouldn't come out to the car. But you did, and it was the best night of my life. I miss those days."

"Rafe, what are you doing? I don't care how you feel and I don't want to talk about the past. It's done. It's time for you to move on."

Her words stung him, but he kept talking. "I hope JJ makes you happy. You deserve it." He took another look at her, got up, and walked away.

Saige groaned. She hated when Rafe tried buttering her up. She knew there was no escaping him... he only lived two houses down from her. But, she hoped they could coexist peacefully and he would leave her alone for good.

But, Rafe had no intentions of it being the end.

Saige shook off the conversation she had with Rafe and made her way back to the party. She thankfully saw JJ cleaning up since there were hardly any other people there and it would soon be time to go.

She walked up behind him and wrapped her arms around him, standing on her tippy toes to kiss him on the cheek. He relaxed into her arms.

"I could sleep for ten years." He said dramatically. Saige giggled and walked around to look at his face. He seemed exhausted.
