Chapter 8 (part 2)

"Why do you kill people?"

The already quiet room became dead silent when Kogami asked that question. The softness in (Y/N)'s expression turned into an indescribable look which Kogami assumed was of grief and shame.

The woman put her head down but even still she couldn't hide from Kogami's waiting stare. The atmosphere of the room became dense; the air sitting heavy on (Y/N)'s lungs.

Kogami silently kept expecting an answer with his eyes, his request not fulfilled any time soon. After what felt like an eternity, the woman finally spoke.

"To live...."

The answer Kogami received wasn't what he was expecting. He assumed it would be something along the lines of revenge but her answer left him puzzled.

(Y/N) finally lifted her head up and looked at Kogami, her eyes glossy from the repressed tears.

"I kill people to live. Sounds very strange, I know but that's the reality."

(Y/N) knew her brief explanation wouldn't suffice or enlighten Kogami so with a sigh, she continued.

"I'm sure you've seen my Psycho Pass before; how it's clean even after I've killed so many..."

Kogami nodded and encouraged her to continue.

"Killing...lowers my Crime Coefficient, it cleans my hue.."

Kogami was surprised at the new information. Ever since he met the woman, this exact thought has been bothering him but now the explanation was presented before him and he didn't know how to react to it.

"My Crime Coefficient increases whenever I'm in stress and killing people is the only way to relieve it. If I don't kill, my hue would be pitch black and eventually Sibyl will kill me"

Everything was falling into place piece by piece even if it sounded absurd but a part of Kogami believed every word she spoke without hesitance.

"Killing others is the only way I can continue living..."

(Y/N) ended her grim explanation, melancholy radiating from her.

"Were you born with this condition?", Kogami asked gently. He could feel how (Y/N) was feeling and he wanted to reach out a helping hand towards her and the best way to do it was to first understand her condition. But Kogami didn't know that would uproot the deeply buried trauma she had faced.

"No. I wasn't born like this. I was turned into this. I was......broken..."

After (Y/N) said that, the room became silent again. Kogami didn't want to press her further but he felt that (Y/N) was finally ready to express her emotions.

"There's no going back now is there?", (Y/N) said with a sullen chuckle. Taking a deep breath, the woman started speaking again.

"It was a long time ago, I don't actually remember how old I was but I remember people breaking into my house. These men first murdered my family then kidnapped me. They took me to this dark and cold place. I was starved for days. They beat me many times daily. I was drugged and tortured every single day. They abused me mentally, physically and sexually. They broke my sanity. This went on until one day, the drug they gave me didn't work fully so I was conscious. I took that chance to kill them all. I gave everything I had in me to mutilate them, give them hell on earth. Eventually the police arrived. I knew my Psycho Pass was a gone case by then so I ran away and went into hiding. From then, I roamed around the outskirts of the city like a savage, I killed many in order to stay sane. Then I was discovered by Nubuo, the man people now know as my late husband but I never married him. He was a sick bastard that liked little psycho girls. He kept me as his slave for some time until I killed him too. I portrayed his death as suicide and inherited all his wealth. My life has been a series of pain and misery ever since that incident. I'm better now but the stress of all those traumas still haunt me and I can't help but kill in order to stay sane."

Kogami was shocked and pained by the story unraveled by (Y/N). He had no idea that she had went through so much. He had no words strong enough to console her. The few tears that managed to escape her eyes moved Kogami further.

"I'm sorry I've been torturing you like this. I understood that I'm no better than my abusers so I came to thank you and give you all the details of Sasayama", (Y/N) said as she placed the files on the coffee table in front of her.

"I'm sorry I bothered you so much. I didn't mean to put the weight of my problems on you like this. I'll take my leave now", (Y/N) said and stood up, already scurrying towards the door. But before she would walk out, Kogami gently grabbed her wrist and stopped her. The two stayed in that position, neither of them not sure on what to do next.

"I'm sorry", Kogami spoke up.

(Y/N) slowly turned around and looked up at the man and realized how close they were standing.

"I never imagined that you went through so much. Im sorry for being inconsiderate"

(Y/N) chuckled and shook her head.

"You're talking to a murderer Mr. policeman. I think it's fair if you're inconsiderate"

"It's nighttime now, I'm off my police duties"

(Y/N) laughed at Kogami's words.

"You're good at keeping promises then, huh Shinya?"

"I didn't forget our deal", Kogami said, a playful smile on his lips.

(Y/N)'s expression suddenly flattened and she looked down.

"I think you will forget about it if I show you my real self"

Kogami was confused at her sudden sadness. He waited for (Y/N) to continue.

"I guess there's no hiding it. I already told you so much"

A gasp came out from Kogami's mouth when (Y/N)'s appearance suddenly changed. (Y/N) had turned off the hologram that was covering her body and revealed her true skin. Her skin was covered in gruesome scars and her left eye was missing.

Kogami's heart broke seeing the broken sight in front of him. (Y/N) looked like a broken porcelain doll at that moment.

(Y/N) began to turn on the hologram but was stopped by Kogami's sudden embrace. The action left the woman surprised and eventually brought tears to her eyes.

"You don't need to hide yourself anymore, (Y/N). You are safe now"

The woman wouldn't help but let more tears escape from her eyes. The hug continued for another minute before the two pulled away.

Kogami placed his hand on (Y/N)'s chin and gently lifted her head up and kissed her. (Y/N) was taken back at first but eventually melted into the kiss.

The soft and sweet kiss lasted for a while before the two pulled away for air. (Y/N) placed a hand on Kogami's cheek and stroked it gently, looking deeply into his eyes.

"Will you be able to love me?"

"I already do."
