The next day was tiring. I didn't sleep last night because I was too busy getting yelled at by my parents.

"What are you doing here? Why aren't you at school?" I stared at my mom in disbelief before turning to River. "Why don't you go to your room and wait for me?"She nods gratefully for the escape.

"Don't ignore your mother, brat." I roll my eyes. "The only one here that is a brat is Carol. If  I'm a brat then she's a bitch."

Crack.

The sting from my mother's slap still lingered on my face as my father pushed me. I cried out as my back hit the door nob. Bruises from days earlier throbbed when my father pushed me to the floor.

"You're a disgrace, just like that sister of yours."

I had brought River over to the motel and watched over her the whole night. Not getting a wink of sleep as I thought about how much I hated my parents.

.Timeskip.

I had explained to my principal that since the middle school had a week off of school and that my sister couldn't be left at home alone. He suggested that if she was quiet, she could go to my classes with me.

River agreed. So to keep her occupied, the school nurse gave her some coloring books and crayons. My teacher was in love with her and allowed her to sit in the back of the classroom.

Finally, the time came for the gym. I had learned that I have that class with a few kids on the Volleyball team. Daichi, Sugawara, and Tanaka.

"Alright you little shrimps, let's see how many laps you run while carrying 60 pounds." The coach hands each of them a backpack with 60-pounds worth of rocks in them. I refused one and put River on my back.

"Go"

River giggle and pointed forwards, "Onwards young stallion, to face the great unknown of our trail." I rolled my eyes with a smile then began jogging. Suga huffed as he caught up to me, Tanaka and Daich following. "Hey, you're the new third-year right?" Suga asked me. I slowed down my pace just a bit so we were even in step. "Yeah, I'm Hunter Jasper." I introduced myself, "And I'm Hunter River!" River chimed into the conversation. Suga smiled kindly at her, "Hello! I'm Sugawara, but you can call me Suga. Not to be rude or anything, but how come you're not in your own school at the moment?" River smiled proudly, "I have a week off of school because the kitchen caught on fire so they have to repair it! So Jasper is my babysitter." Thankfully, none of them asked about their parents.

"How can you say that so calmly?!" Tanaka shouted in her ear. She winced and glared at him, "How can you walk around with that haircut? It's absolutely absurd!" She retorted. Daich and Suga looked away and snickered, while Tanaka fumed. "WHAT WAS THAT YOU BRAT?!" I laughed nervously, "River, don't be rude. It's not how I raised you," I said to her over my shoulder. To my relief, she huffed and looked away, mumbling incoherent nonsense. "I'm so sorry Tanaka, I think your haircut suits you just fine, " Hopefully that would calm him down; Tanka smiled. "Hey, you're not too bad yourself. Say, do you play Volleyball?"

'Oh no.'

3rd POV

River immediately perked up. "OF COURSE HE DOES! Or at least he did. He played for the Pack Runners!" She exclaimed but then tapped her chin thoughtfully. "However, that was a few years ago. "More like a few hundred, " He muttered under his breath. "No way, so that means you guys are American! The Pack Runner's were legends, even for being Eleven-year-olds! You guys were the first American team to make it into the Japanese Nationals!" Daichi exclaimed. "I knew that name was familiar. Number 10, Jasper Hunter." Suga said in aww. Jasper chuckled and looked at the ceiling thoughtfully, "I loved Volleyball. However, as soon as we made 5th place in nationals, we all agreed to focus on our studies. So we split ways for now. I haven't talked to them in 7 years." He told them as they came to a stop in front of the gym teacher.
