A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away...

... someone was happy. See picture.

This popped up on my Instagram feed this morning, as I follow NASA purely for incredible pics and space oddity.

Mr Happy in the center of the image, is actually galaxy cluster SDSS J1038+4849 - but we shall call him Bob.

Bob's eyes are very bright galaxies and the misleading smile lines are actually arcs caused by an effect known as strong gravitational lensing, which is where the massive gravitational pull of the cluster warps the spacetime around them. This acts as a cosmic lense (Bob's a hippy, cosmic man) which distorts and bend the lights.

But all sciencey stuff aside: on a grey morning, Bob just kinda made me smile =]
