Hiccup nearly fainted as he saw it. Out of joy, that the night wasn't playing tricks on him when he shot it down, and, more importantly, out of fear, that the beast was only about ten feet away from him.

Hiccup:"I did it. I actually did it." he walks towards him with his knife, ready to kill. "I'm going to kill you, dragon. I'm gonna cut out your heart and take it to my father. I'm a Viking. I am a VIKING!" As his eyes wonder over the creature, he meets its gaze, and couldnt bring himself to strike. There was no bestial hunger, no rage or hatred. Only fear. Fear and a plea for mercy. This wasn't a vicious beast. This was an intelligent creature, scared for its life just as he was for his own mere moments ago. What shocked him the most was the defeat in its eyes. It was begging for mercy it didnt think it would recieve. It was scared of a fate it knew was coming. It was defeated and defenseless, completely at Hiccups' mercy. And it heard what he said, it understood what he said. Hiccup tried to close his eyes to not see it, and raised his knife again. But what happened next was what broke him. A cry of fear, pain, and despair. It wasnt a call for help. It wasnt a roar to intimidate. It was a sad cry of a creature accepting its death.

Toothless:"Just get it over with. End my misery, earn your "glory" once and for all. The ropes hurt, so please, just end it."

Hiccup:"I can't do it. I... I just,... cant."

He turns to walk away, but the sudden shock and sympathy made him stop. The dragon was now simply silently lying.
Toothless:"What is taking so long. I dont want to feel the ropes anymore." Just then, the ropes start to loosen. He was being...... released? What for. To fight? Did the human want to increase his glory by defeating him? Or did have the decency to at least allow him to die fighting? Either way, he wouldnt let him. He was scared. He didnt want to die. Not like this. Not in the woods, all alone. Then the ropes came off.
Hiccup:"Go. Just, get out of here."
Toothless was confused. The boy took his ropes off, but put his knife under his skin (HE HAD MULTIPLE LAYERS!!) and stepped away.
Toothless: pounces on the boy, knocking him down before roaring right in his face. "Leave me alone! Or I will tear you apart. I will not be merciful next time." He then tries to fly away, but crashes into trees. Behind him, the boy only took a couple steps away before collapsing.
Back at the Chiefs' house
Stoick was sitting near the fire, clearly sunken into his own thoughts. He didnt even notice his son enter until after Hiccup accidentally knocked a pot over.
Stoick:"Hiccup. We need to talk."
Hiccup:"Uh, can it wait? I have a lo-
Stoick:"Now."
Hiccup:"Oh. Ok."

Stoick:"I've decided. Tommorow, you will start."

Hiccup:"Uhh, start what?"

Stoick:"You get your wish. You're going dragon training."

Hiccup:"Actually, dad, about that. I was thinking, uh, you know, we have a surplus of dragon-fighting Vikings, but do we have enough... bread-making Vikings, or small home repair Vikings--?"

Stoick:"Here. You'll need this." He hands Hiccup an axe, which nearly makes him fall over.

Hiccup:"I don't want to fight dragons, dad."

Stoick:"Ahh, of course you do. You've been yammering about it since you could talk."

Hiccup:"Okay, dad, let me rephrase that. I CAN'T kill dragons."

Stoick:"But you WILL kill dragons. Gobber will teach you."

Hiccup:"Dad, can you not hear what I'm saying?"

Stoick:"This is serious, son! When you carry this axe, you carry all of us with you. Which means you walk like us. You talk like us. You think like us. No more of... this.

Hiccup:"You just gestured to all of me."

Stoick:"Deal?"

Hiccup:"This conversation is feeling very one-sided."
