Chapter 9: Teamwork, Blazing fall, Test flight

Berk, Hofferson house

Astrid was pacing back and forth, wondering. She needed to confront Hiccup, to make sure he says nothing of what happened when she was drunk. But recently, he had become near impossible to track down. He had been leaving the arena early, and is always either in public or missing. So far, she had not been able to catch him alone, and it was driving her crazy. She needed to make sure he wouldn't share anything. She didn't think he would, since he still hasn't, but she needed to make sure. She was planning to catch him after training today. With both Ulfhild and Ruffnut returning, today would be busy. Recent training lessons were just more rounds with the Gronckle or one of the Nadders. Now with all eight trainees, there is supposedly something special for today. She wasn't sure whether that meant a new dragon or something else. But her priority was getting Hiccup alone. And unbeknownst to her, she was gonna get exactly what she wanted.

Berk, the Kill ring

Gobber and Spitelout had already decided on team building excersises. First, they would split the teens into teams. Then there were dragon fights. Each duo would fight one of the four less dangerous dragons: the Gronckle, the Nadders and the Zippleback. The Gronckle and Zippleback knew hurting the kids seriously would end up with them getting killed, while the Nadders almost seem to enjoy the competition. And, at last, the teams would face off in a tournament, with the winners getting free time during the next training session. As the trainees started to show up, Gobber was considering how to make the teams when Spitelout suggested to just make them random while also balanced. With four extremely talented and skilled fighters and four not-so-skilled ones. At the end, they decided to write down the skilled fighter's names and having the others draw from a helmet a paper with the name of their partner. Then, they would all unwrap their paper and figure out who their teamnate was. Spitelout brought out a spare helmet and wrote down the names.

Spitelout:"Alright, everyone, get over here! We're gonna have some teamwork training. You four," he pointed at Snotlout, Ulfhild, Astrid and Dogsbreath "stand over there. The rest of you come here and find out who your partner is."

Fishlegs:"Hopefully someone good."

Gobber:"They're all good. It's why we have them separate from each other."

Fishlegs went first, then Hiccup, Ruffnut and Tuffnut.

Spitelout:"Now open them."

Fishlegs opened his first.

Fishlegs:"I got ... Snotlout..."

He went completely pale, while Snotlout was clearly angry.

Snotlout:"Why do I get the worst one?"

Tuffnut:"Oh, oh, I'm next! I got ... Dogsbreath! Yeah!"

Dogsbreath chuckled at his partner's enthusiasm.

Ruffnut:"I got... Ulfhild?"

Ulfhild:"Don't worry, I'm not gonna let you down."

Astrid's eyes were popping out of her head. She was gonna have to work with Hiccup alone. She wanted to talk to him, not be stuck with him like this.

Gobber:"Alright, now on to the first challenge. Fishlegs, Snotlout, you're up first against the ..."

Spitelout:"Oh, right. I'll get the helmet. You get... the Gronckle."

Snotlout:"Really, I get the worst AGAIN!?"

Fishlegs:"At least we'll have it easy."

Spitelout:"Then Tuffnut and Dogsbreath get the Zippleback, Ruffnut and Ulfhild get the brown Nadder and Hiccup and Astrid are gonna have fun with the blue one. Alright, clear the ring!"
