I get in the car and drive back to my parents house. Kia is still whimpering in the seat next to me and I can't take it anymore. I pull over and tell George and Ezra to switch us seats. They do without questioning me and I pull Kia into the backseat. She sits in the middle of me and Mitch while cries on my shoulder.
I look down at her and kiss her head. No one says anything but I know that Kia is more comfortable with us not saying anything. We stop at my house before heading over to my parents and I take Kia inside. She goes to the bathroom and tries her best to cover up the fact that she has been crying. I walk in behind her and she looks at me with hurt in her eyes. “Did you hit him?”
I nod my head and answer, “I did. I busted his lip, hit him in the beer belly twice, and somewhere else.”
“Did you do it for me or just because he hit a girl?”
I hug her but she winces so I loosen my grip on her. “Kia, I love you. I hit him because he hurt you. I wanted to hit him when he was simply calling you names.”
She looks at me and I know she wants to ask something else but can't find the words. “Was it hard for you to stop?” I look at her confused. I wasn't expecting that question. “I remember you saying that you have anger problems, was it hard for you to stop hitting him? And what sets you off? What if I was to do something that really made you mad? Would you hit me?”
I hold her hand and I say, “I have techniques that I do whenever I get angry. I haven't been in a fist fight in long time. And yes it was kind of hard for me to stop, but I did because I knew if I hit him anymore that I would go to jail and lose you.”
She looks in my eyes and kisses me. “I know you are telling the truth. You have kind eyes when you tell the truth, when you lie they aren't so kind, and I am pretty sure that you don't even know it.”
I look at her confused. “When have I lied to you?”
“When you told me that you wanted me to go on at least five dates with another guy.”
I smile and nod my head. We should probably get back out to the car, but I am not ready to leave yet. She turns back to the mirror very carefully and I lift her shirt. She looks at me surprised but I just look at her abdomen. She is nothing but skin and bones. Right in the middle of her stomach is a giant bruise. I look at her and whisper, “Did he seriously hurt you this bad?”
She nods her head and a tear falls from her eyes again. “Yeah and it hurts really bad. I think he might have broken my ribs again.”
“Again?” I ask feeling my anger rising. She nods her head and I count to ten and then walk to the living room. She sits on the couch next to me and waits for me to say something. I grab my guitar and start strumming. Playing is one of the ways that I calm myself down when I feel angry.
Mitch walks in and says, “Okay I know that you two are having a moment but mom just called and the food is almost done and we are hungry out here, so can you hurry up?”
Kia laughs and walks out to the car but I can tell her energy is deflating with every step she takes. “Mitch you and your food,” she jokes with him.
Mitch looks at me and I mouth, “I'll tell you later.”
He nods his head as we all get in the car. The drive to my parents' house is short so we don't say anything. When we get out of the car Kia can barely walk without crying. “I don't want your parents to know, please don't tell them,” she begs me.
I nod my head and pick her up in my arms bridal style. She tries to laugh but it turns into a silent cry. I carry her in and lay her on the couch. My parents look at me confused and I explain, “She is tired. Long car trips tire her out really easily.”
They nod their heads but I know that they know I am lying. Mitch pulls them to the side and I hear him whisper, “Her parents wanted to see her, and they don't get along at all. Hints why she moved in with Jacob.”
My mom walks over to Kia and hugs her tightly. “I will be your mom I promise. I love you already.”
Kia is holding her breath as she replies to my mom. “Thanks. I love you too.”
My mom squeezes her tighter and Kia lets her tears flow. My mom looks at her confused and Kia lifts her shirt to show my mom her bruise. My mom looks at me to explain. Kia nods her head and I tell my mom the whole story, from the time that Kia moved in to today. My mom wants to cry out of empathy but she holds it in. “Sweetie, I am glad that you stood up to your parents. I know they didn't deserve to have a wonderful daughter like you and it makes me so sad that they hurt you.”
Kia hugs her gently and whispers, “I think my ribs are broke, but I don't want to ruin anyone else's Christmas.”
My mom looks at Kia and mutters, “Pish posh, you are not ruining our Christmas. Christmas means nothing if you aren't with your family. So we, as a family, will go up to the ER with you. I know the food will taste just as good microwaved.”
Kia smiles at her and says, “We can wait until after we eat. The boys are hungry.”
My mom looks at me and does the finger wiggle telling me to come over to her. I do what she asks and she whispers, “Listen to me, don't ever let your girl hurt. It is no fun for her and you will feel like crap after everything is said and done.” I nod my head and my mom continues, “You need to talk her to the ER. I will hurry them up with their eating so we can come up and join you. They will probably want Kia to stay overnight.”
I nod my head and carry Kia out to the car. She looks at me and I can tell she is upset about something other then the fact that her dad just beat her. “What's wrong?”
She shrugs and looks at me. I wait for her to say something. “I'm jealous okay? Your mom is wonderful and she loves you and your brothers so much. And your sister even though she moved out of state and doesn't come home often. She is so accepting of me and all I get is a mom that calls me a slut and says that the second that you knock me up you will leave. Because all I am is a no good white trash hoe.”
I look at Kia and tell her, “That is not true. You are wonderful and you know that you aren't a slut or a no good white trash hoe. If we do anything before marriage, and you do get pregnant, you won't be alone. I will never leave your side. Even when you tell me too, I will always be beside you for when you need me.” She smiles and I continue, “My mom will gladly welcome you in too the family. My dad will take some time, but let me reassure you that my family will always be your family. Even if you don't want me anymore, you will always be apart of the family.”
Kia looks at me and the rest of the drive to the hospital is silent. I am afraid of what we are going to tell the doctors because I know we can't turn her dad in. She looks at me and all the worries I am thinking of disappear into thin air.
