I am driving to work when my phone goes off. I answer it without looking to see who it is. “Hello?”
“Jacob, I am so happy that you answered your phone,” a female voice says on the other end of the phone.
“Yeah...” I say slowing down to turn into the parking lot.
“Um, I need help.”
“Where are you?”
There is a loud band and then someone says, “I told you too get off the phone you ungrateful little slut.”
I slam on the brakes and listen. I hear crying and then the girl whisper, “I am at my house. My dad is angry and mom is out of town, please hurry.” The phone goes dead.
Quickly I turn around and look at my phone to see I just talked to. Kia. I speed up trying to avoid the traffic I know I will hit on my way to her house. Five towns over, an hour and a half away. I pick up my speed and am sitting in a dead stand still of traffic. This can't be happening. I think to myself.
My phone goes off again and I look to see who it is. “Kia,” I almost scream into the phone.
“Jacob, hurry my dad just left but he told me that he would be back soon.”
“Kia, I can only go so fast. I am an hour and a half away.”
“I know but please hurry.”
I sit there and think. “What happened?”
“He got really mad at me.”
I take a deep breath. “Did he hit you?”
“No,” she breaths out but I can tell she lying to me.
“Kia, where did he hit you?”
“He just slapped me. Not very hard, I don't have any marks.”
“Can you get out of the house? He is gone right?”
She is quiet for a minute then she whispers, “Yeah he's gone but where would I go? He could come back and see me walking down the road and get even more mad.”
“Didn't you say that your friend lived down the road? Go there. I will call you when I am almost there.”
“Thanks, Jacob.” Then just before she hangs up she whispers, “I love you.”
Traffic starts moving again and I speed down the passing lane as far as I can. I passed five cars, but that is five less cars I have to deal with. Traffic is very stop and go, and I feel like I am being tested.
I know that Kia doesn't want to call the cops on her dad, but I also know that is what needs to be done. I think for a minute and then I text Kia. I'm calling Kathy. She will take you to her place. I'll pick you up there.
I don't wait for a reply I just drive and call Kathy. She answers and I can tell she was still asleep. She isn't going to be very happy with me, but I know she will eventually come around. “What?”
“Baby I need you to do me a huge favor.”
“What,” she mumbles.
“Go pick Kia up and take her to your house.”
“What? Why?”
That is the one question I was hoping that she wouldn't ask me. “Listen just do it. She is at a friends house. I'll ask her for the address and then text it to you. I'll be there soon.”
I hang up and see I have a message from Kia.
Her: Why I will be safe here until you get here to get me.
