Two weeks later I get a text from Kia.  I can't believe that I have to go back with them.  I know they won't let me see you :(

I don't know how to reply to her.  I want her here with me but I know that if I say anything like that it won't be easy on her.  I know :/ but I will figure something out.

She doesn't reply and I am guessing that her parents took her phone from her.  I sit down at my desk and my students look at me.  I've been back for a week and half and no one has dared to ask how Kia is.  Finally Dean speaks up, “I'm sorry about Kia.”

I shrug it off.  “It's okay.  Her parents have taken her back in and forgiven her for whatever they were mad about.  I guess a near death experience can open someone's eyes even if it isn't your own experience.”

Everyone is quiet.  I don't want to teach right now.  I look at the class and try to think of something math related we can do that doesn't require much from me.  I can't so I say, “Well read page one fifty nine in your book.  Your assignment is this worksheet on my desk.”

They all pull out their books and quietly read.  I am happy that they are cooperating but at the same time I wish someone would create a distraction to get my thoughts off of Kia.  Mitch texts me random smiley faces and I just ignore him.  How can he be so smiley when all I want to do is curl up in a ball and die.  My house is so empty without Kia and her stuff in it, and quiet.  I can't sleep at night knowing that the room next door is empty.

When the bell rings everyone silently files out of the room and I look down at my desk.  I don't want to get up to leave and I don't want to grade work from the time I was gone but I don't want to just sit here doing nothing either.  I pull out my phone and I look at the pictures I have of me and Kia.  I smile as the memories come rushing back with every photograph.

I get to the ones from Christmas and smile as I remember the kiss we shared after my mom took the pictures.  Kia smiled with a thousand watts and she whispered, “Never thought I would be able to call you my boyfriend.”  I simply smiled at her and kissed her again.

I hear a knock on the door and I raise my eyes.  One of the teachers is standing there and he whispers, “You love her don't you?”

“What?” I ask playing it cool.

“Come on, all the teachers were trying to guess how long it would be until you guys started dating.”

            “Really?”

“Yeah.  Thanks for waiting until Christmas, I won.”

I laugh and ask, “How do you know we are dating though?”

He looks up at the clock then out the window.  “Jacob, it is almost nine at night and you are still sitting in your desk not moving.  Lets face it after break you guys just acted different.”  I smile and look at him.  I guess we did act a little different but I didn't think it was very obvious that everyone would notice.  “So you really love her don't you?”

I nod my head.  “Yeah I do.”

“Then why aren't you with her?”

“Because her parents made her move back in with them.”

He nods his head and then walks out of the room.  He stops and look back at me.  “Jacob, don't let her parents stop you.  You lived together for months and she was happy here.  We could all see that.”
