I've been talking to Kia a lot lately and so has Mitch. We have quickly become best friends and I realize that she is becoming more like a little sister to me each day. I don't want her to get hurt and I will do anything and everything to protect her.
Kathy isn't to excited about the whole idea but I know that she will get used to it eventually. She talks to other guys so she should accept the fact I talk to other girls.
My phone rings as I answer it walking to my car after school has let out for the day. “Hello?”
“Hey, I have a question.”
“Geez Kia you waste no time, I just got off.”
She laughs and it is an angelic laugh, but I try not to think about it that way. “Seriously though, I was just wondering when your next show and where it is at.”
“Well it is tomorrow night in Rogers at some bar.”
“Dang!”
I laugh because I know she wants to go to another one of our shows but she can't get into most of them. “You know if you want to go bad enough I can get you access right?”
“How would you do that?”
“You are with the band duh. But in all seriousness I can say you are a roadie or something and you can get in, just as long as you have a band pass and you stay close to the stage.”
“You would do that for me?”
I think about it for a minute and say, “Yeah, I know you love us and want to see us do an actual show.”
I know she is smiling and then she asks, “Will Kathy be there?”
“Probably.”
She is silent and I sigh. I can't tell Kathy she can't come to a show because Kia is going to be there, but they don't get along at all. Kia tries and says she just looks up to us and wants to get to know about the music career but Kathy doesn't buy it.
“Listen Kia,” I say hesitating.
“Yeah?”
“Kathy isn't that bad. She is just worried.”
“About what?”
“That you will steal me away or something.” I start to think about it but know that I shouldn't have said it because it will raise a question out of Kia I don't want to think about.
“Why does she think that?”
“I don't know, but listen if you come be careful and let me know.”
“Oh just because she is there doesn't mean I won't be.”
I laugh and say, “Okay try to dress conservatively. I know you think you are grown up but you aren't and I don't want some guy to take advantage of you.”
“Aww overprotective big brother mode kicking in?”
“You know it.”
I hang up the phone and sit in my car. How does a seventeen year old girl make me feel like this. I don't know what it is about her but she makes me happy and feel away that Kathy doesn't.
I drive straight over to Mitch's house and wait for band practice to start. Mitch walks in without anyone and I say, “So how would you feel if we added a little bit of an extra guest at our show tomorrow?”
“What does that mean?”
“I may have promised Kia that she could have a band pass...”
He rolls his eyes and says, “She's a minor you know that right? Like she could get a lot of people in trouble, cause face it, she looks older than she is and she is good looking.”
I smile a little and turn my head. I know she is, believe me. I want to say to Mitch but I hold it in and wait for the rest of the band to get here.
When they are all there Mitch says, “Okay we have a mission tomorrow night, besides to put on an awesome show.” He just gets blank looks from everyone but me. “We have a guest coming who needs a band pass to get in the show. Any guesses who?”
Simultaneously they all yell out, “Kia?”
I blush and Billy says, “So this teenage girl gets access to our shows because Jacob has a thing for her, and we have to babysit?”
“Pretty much,” says Peter.
“I don't think that is fair!” Cries Randy.
I just sigh and say, “Listen guys, I will keep an eye on her and if anyone tries anything I will be the one to take care of it but I would appreciate if you see something you tell me.”
They all agree and we start practicing. My hands are moving, but I don't pay attention to what I am doing. I stop when the others do and Mitch looks at me like I need to get my head in the game. We have a show tomorrow and right now I am not playing my best and it makes the rest of the band look and sound bad.
After the practice I stand around and wait for someone to say something but it is all awkward. I don't know why no one is saying anything so I go into the kitchen to look for food. As I walk into the kitchen I hear Mitch whisper, “How much longer do you think it will be until he breaks up with Kathy?”
“Not long, he is already trying to make it to where Kia can make it to all the shows,” Peter answers.
Randy replies, “He's just worried about his feelings. I mean let's face it if Kia was flirting and toying with any of us, we would fall too.”
Billy laughs. “Yeah she is pretty hot, but I mean is she really worth going to jail? What if something happens to her at the bar tomorrow night?”
I walk back into the room and they all stop talking. These guys that are supposed to be like family to me are talking about me behind my back and think I wouldn't hear about them?
I storm out of the house and get in my truck waiting for something to happen. To show me what to do. I sit there thinking and then there is a knock on my window. I roll it down and Mitch says, “What's up your ass?”
“Maybe I just don't like my best friends and my brother talking crap on me the second they think I am out of earshot.”
“We weren't talking crap on you. Be honest with yourself you have a thing for Kia.”
“So what if I do. I love Kathy.”
“But are you IN LOVE with Kathy? Or is it truly just love?”
I roll up my window and pull the truck into the road and head home. How can Mitch think that about me. I might fight with Kathy a lot, but I wouldn't leave her for the world. Besides Kia has a crush on someone that is not me, I have to accept that fact once and for all.
