Chapter Eleven

Three weeks later I am getting ready to open up for Hunter Hayes. Kathy still won't talk to me but I know she will come around sometime, or I think she will anyway. I am able to get a band pass for Kia and she is ecstatic. We are sitting backstage watching as Hunter's crew sets up.

Kia starts freaking out and I look in the direction that she is and I see Hunter's band walking in. Kia looks at me and I don't know what to do, she knows more about them than I do, so she should be the one that makes the first move, not me.

Kia sighs and looks away from them. I look over again and they are holding out their hands. Mitch, Billy, Randy, and Peter step up and shake their hands introducing themselves. I step and say, “Hey, I'm Jacob.”

“Nice to meet you,” the one with the awesome dreadlocks exclaims. “I'm Matt. This is Devo, Steve, and Sam.” He looks over at Kia and says, “You look familiar.”

“Twitter, probably,” she answers. Matt smiles and nods his head. “My name is Kia.”

“Well hello there Kia,” they all say. She smiles and I can tell she wants to ask a question but is scared.

Finally the one I think is Devo says, “Hunter will be here soon. Right now he is in the Coffee House Experience.”

Mitch nods his head and says, “Thanks so much for letting us open for you guys. It is a true honor that you wanted a local band to open up for you.”

Matt speaks up, “It is our way of paying back I guess. I mean I know that we were once all wanting to be big, and look at us now. Pay it forward!”

Kia starts laughing and walks away. I want to stay with Matt, Devo, Sam, and Steve but I want to see what Kia is doing. I look at them and Sam says, “Go after her, we will still be here when you get back.”

I smile at him and take off after Kia. She turns around and says, “What took you so long?”

I look at her confused and she takes a step closer to me. I start to get nervous but I don't know what for. “Sorry I wasn't sure if I wanted to talk to you or them more.”

“Jacob,” she whispers in my ear. When did she get so close?

“Yes,” I choke out.

“What are you and Kathy right now?”

I gulp and stay quiet. What does she mean? “Um I think we are still dating why?”

She shrugs her shoulders and looks at me. Before I know it I take another step closer to her. She is right against me and I want to kiss her really bad but I can't hurt Kathy like that so I take a step back. “I saw Kathy the other day. I was in town getting my stuff my parents house and she was walking down the street holding hands with some guy. He looked like he was a little older than her. And I started thinking, maybe that is why she got so defensive that day.”

I look at her shocked. Kathy is cheating on me? I mean what? “Kia, please don't tell me that.”

She rolls her eyes and says, “Why would I keep it from you? You haven't talked to her since that fight and then I see her walking down the street holding some guys hand.”

“Kia just stop.”

She starts crying. I don't know what to do. Kathy isn't cheating on me, she can't be. “Jacob I am sorry okay. I shouldn't have said anything. I just thought that maybe you should know. So you could be happy.”

I look at her and I know exactly what she is doing. She told me because she likes me as more than a brother and she thinks I like her as more than a sister. I smile at her and before I know it I am leaning down. Her lips are soft and feel right against mine. With Kathy it felt right, but that was before I kissed Kia.

I pull away and she smiles at me. I smile back at her. She walks away and I walk to the rest of the band. Mitch looks at me and he can tell by the look on my face that something is up. “Jacob, tell me what happened after you walked away. You and Kia came both come back with a huge smile on your face.”

I shrug my shoulders and ask, “Did Hunter get here yet?”

Mitch shakes his head and I don't know what to do. I wait and Mitch says, “Let's go do sound check and what not. I mean after all we should at least sound good before Hunter gets here.”

I do what I am told but I don't feel my body. I just go through the motions of what I am accustomed to doing. I smile at the thought of Kia. Finally we get done and I look for Kia. I have to talk to her about what happened.

“Kia!” I call out.

“Yes,” she whispers from a corner behind me. I turn around and she steps closer to me. “Jacob I know that you want to talk about the kiss. So let me start by saying, I am sorry. I shouldn't have done the conversation and kept it going until you kissed me. I know that you are still with Kathy, but I just had to kiss you to know if I felt anything.”

“Did you?” I ask reluctantly.

She shrugs and returns my question, “Did you?”

I shrug and then I turn my head. Hunter Hayes is walking towards us and I stop talking to her. She turns around and sees Hunter. She starts smiling and looks from me to Hunter, then back to me. When Hunter stops in front of us she smiles and says, “OMG I love you so much!”

“Thank you! What's your name?”

“Kia. Oh my gosh like you don't even understand, you are my hero.”

He smiles and looks at me. “Good girl you got here. The others told me that you are Jacob right?”

I nod my head and answer, “Yeah, I'm Jacob, and she is just a friend, more like a little sister.”

He smiles and says, “Too bad, you guys look cute together.”

I don't know what to do so I just stand there and we just talk about random stuff. Mostly music. Kia looks at me excitedly and I smile at her. She walks away and Hunter smiles at me. “I think you two like each other am I right?”

I nod my head. “Yeah, she is amazing, but I have a girlfriend.”

“You love Kia. I can see it in your eyes. Why stay with your girlfriend?”

“Cause I love my girlfriend.”

“I don't think you do. I mean I am just a twenty-one year old dude who writes songs about girls that will never know that it is about them but I mean come on you need to know that you and Kia are the one for each other.”

I smile at Hunter and his advice. He knows a lot about what he is talking about but I don't know if I can really listen to what he is saying. I mean I love Kathy but kissing her doesn't compare to how it felt kissing Kia tonight. Maybe it was just because it was new, or maybe it is because it is what is right.

I walk away and wait until we have to go on stage to start the show tonight.
