I open my eyes and I am in lying in a hospital bed. The nurse smiles at me and says, “Okay Jacob, we have your family here. They have been dying to talk to you.”
My mom comes running in the room and sits on the edge of my bed. “Jacob Bryan Chance, don't you ever scare me like that again!”
I look at her confused. I don't remember much of what happened. I just remember Kia screaming and then waking up here. Everyone is chatting and I just feel so lost. I don't know how long they talk before Mitch says, “Are you okay?”
I nod my head but it hurts so I whisper, “I think so. Where's Kia? I need to see her!”
Everyone looks at me and the look on their faces tells me something isn't right. I wait and with every silent second that passes, my heart feels a little heavier and I don't know what to do or to say. I just want to see Kia.”
My mom clears her throat and whispers, “Honey Kia is a little more beat up then you are. Right now she isn't allowed visitors.”
I look at my mom confused. I don't care if visitors are allowed or not. I want to see Kia. I need to see Kia. “Mom, I have to make sure she is okay. Please,” I whisper begging her. She shakes her head no and I have a feeling that something isn't right. “Please mom,” I say tears coming to my eyes. My just continues to shake her head no.
Ezra grabs my shoulder and says, “Mom doesn't want to tell you, but Kia is in a coma. She is in ICU and she can't have visitors because of how severe her coma is. We tried but they told us only family is allowed up there. And they don't count us as family.”
I look at the nurse that is still getting all the readings off the machine next to my bed. “Please, I need to see Kia McDown!”
The nurse looks at me and I know that she is going to tell me no, that I am not family. She sighs and asks, “Are you family?”
Before I can register the words coming out of my mouth I nod my head. “Not yet. We are engaged.”
My mom looks at me and Mitch gives her the he's lying play along look. The nurse looks at me and says, “But neither of you have rings on.”
“I'm her teacher, we can't wear rings.”
The nurse nods her head but I know she doesn't buy my story. “Well it doesn't matter because she is only allowed two visitors at a time and her parents haven't left her side since she got in here, and they refuse too.”
Mitch grabs the nurse by the shoulders in a smooth let's talk way and whispers, “Get them out of her room,” in a strict voice. The nurse is confused and Mitch continues, “She has five broken ribs because her dad kicked her on Christmas day, and they kicked her out of the house and told her to never come back.”
The nurse looks at us all confused. “I've met her parents and they don't seem like the abusive type,” she says.
“Why do you think I live with an eighteen year old? I don't just let them move in with me for the fun of it. It was a bad environment for her. If you look at her arms you will see at least a hundred scars from where she cut herself because of them.”
The nurse looks concerned and then says, “Doesn't matter what you guys tell me, they are still legally family and there is nothing I can do about it.” I let out a scream of frustation and the nurse looks at me. “Are you in pain?”
