The next morning I wake up to my alarm going of at five in the morning.  I moan and slap the snooze button, but I know that I am awake.  I lie there waiting for my alarm to go off again and when it does I turn it off and get of bed.  I walk to the kitchen and I start breakfast.  I usually try to cook something that is a little bit healthy for breakfast but this morning I don't know what I want to make so I just throw some pizza in the oven to warm it up.  Most people would use the microwave but I feel that pizza only taste good when it comes out of the oven.

I walk to Kia's room and knock on the door before going in.  She is still sound asleep and I smile at her.  “Yo Kia, wake up home girl.”

She grunts and says, “Leave me alone.”

“Nope,” I pull on her blanket trying to wake her up but she is used to my tricks.  “Kia, we have the same fight every morning.  I know you hate me for making you wake up so early, but you need to wake up and get dressed.  Breakfast will be done soon.”

“What did you make?” she asks through a yawn.

I laugh and she looks at me confused.  “I made left over pizza from last night.”

She groans some more and I walk out of the room.  She knows she needs to get up and I know that she will.  I come back after checking on the pizza and she is already dressed.  “Happy now?” she asks crankily.

I laugh and pull her into a hug.  “Very much so.”

“Let me go so I can eat then brush my teeth.”

I let her go and follow her down the hallway.  She made sure to put in an effort today and I want to ask why but then I remember our conversation from last night.  She wants to make the guys look so they will ask her out some more.  That sneaky little girl, but I will give her the credit that those pants will make a guy stop and stare.

She turns around and catches me looking at her ass.  “Are you jealous?”

I nod my head and say, “Very much so that I can't keep you all to myself.”

“You had that chance, but you ruined it.”  She sticks her tongue out at me and I know she is in her normal, happy mood again.  Like last night never happened.

We eat breakfast then I drive her to school.  “Thanks Jacob, I'll see you during math.”

“Yep,” I say not caring that she didn't call me Mr. Chance.  I am used to it by now.  She refuses to because of the fact that she quote 'has known me for so long and it is like we are brother and sister and she can't make Mr. Chance come out of her mouth.'

I walk into my classroom and sit down at my desk waiting for everyone to come to class and either ask questions about last nights homework or come up with excuses for why they didn't do the homework.

The day drags on until Kia walks into my classroom.  She sits down and one of my other students, Dean, sits next to her.  I hear him say, “So I saw you walking down the hall and I thought to myself, why is that girl not on my arm?”

She giggles.  Kia actually giggled at that?  I chuckle and see them look in my direction.  I continue to look down at my desk and listen to their conversation.  “I don't know why either Dean.”

“Well, we should fix that.  How about this Friday we go to the game together and then get some food?”

Kia nods her head.  “It is a date.”

Dean replies, “Hopefully the first of many.”  Kia winks at him and then he sits in his assigned seat.

I start class and Kia looks at me the whole time.  I know she only agreed to go out with Dean because I made her.  Well, I made her agree to go out with someone.  I just don't like that it is Dean.  He is the school player and everyone knows it, even the teachers, but we can't do anything about it as long as it happens outside of the school property.

The final bell rings and I say, “Kia, why don't you just wait there.  I have to make a couple copies then we will go home.”

She nods her head and as I walk out the door I hear Dean say, “You live with him?”

I don't hear her response but I know she is going to say something along the lines of we are as close as brother and sister because our families are friends and she got kicked out of her house.  That is the story that we agreed to tell everyone but the school board.  They know the true story and while they are mad we haven't reported him, they are happy that she is now in a safe environment.

I walk back into the classroom after making the copies and Dean is still there talking to Kia.  “Dean can I help you with something?”

He shakes his head and answers, “Nope, I was just keeping this pretty young lady company while she waited for her adopted big brother to come back.”

I smile at him.  “Just so you know I do act like her big brother so you better be careful with how you treat her and talk about her.”

Dean smiles at her and whispers, “I will.  She is different from the other girls.”

I look at Kia and she is blushing.  I mean blushing a lot.  Not that little blushing she does when I catch her singing and dancing while listening to her iPod, but a full force smile.

Dean winks at me and politely asks, “Can I drive her home please?”

I look at Kia and she shrugs her shoulders.  I think about it for a minute then I say, “Yeah if she wants you to.  But be careful.”  I look at Kia.  “Do you have your key?”

            “Yeah.”

They walk out and Dean grabs her hand.  I get jealous and fast.  He is moving way to fast for her.  There is a reason that she always has on long sleeved shirts and no one wants to know why she got kicked out of her house.  No one wants to get to know her, not like I do anyway.

I sit down at my desk and decide that I will grade some quizzes from last week.  I tell myself it is because I know it needs to be done, and I am sure that Kia would like some alone time, but in all honesty I know it is because I don't want to see Kia with Dean, because it would kill me a little inside.

Two hours later my phone goes off and I answer it without looking.  “Hello?”

“Where are you Jacob?  I am bored and I need help with my math homework.  I tried doing it but it doesn't make sense.”

“I'll be there in a minute.  I guess I just got caught up in grading.”

I hang up the phone and head home.  I stop at McDonald's on my way and buy some dinner because I don't feel like cooking and I know that Kia won't want to cook either.  I smile as I think about how weird that is.  Kia doesn't work, she doesn't cook, she doesn't do anything really.  Not even hang out with friends.  She just sits on the couch watching movies or doing homework.  Occasionally she will go to her room and be quiet all night, but she is always by herself whenever she gets the chance.  I smile as I think about that, then I frown.  When she is alone that means she is able to think about everything that isn't right.  I hurry home and walk in the door to find her passed out on the couch with a bottle of Jack Daniels beside her.
