Three A.M Tuesday morning.
Three A.M Tuesday morning is when my already fucked up life gets so much fucking worse.
-
"Gray! Gray get your ass up!"
"What the fuc-" but before I can finish my sentence my brother is throwing a hoodie and sweats my way.
"We need to get to the hospital!"
"What ? Why?" He doesn't answer. Instead he rushes out of our bedroom. I hurriedly out my clothes on and meet my brother who's halfway out the door already.
"Wait! What the fuck is going on!?" Putting my shoes on, my brother starts running down the street like he's on crack.
"Justin!"
"Moms in the hospital."
-
After our hour long sprint to the hospital, my brother talks to the receptionist while I bend over to catch my breath.
"I'm looking for Anne Woods. My mother. I got a call that someone brought her in?"
I drowned out there voices, too tired to even try to understand what was happening anymore.
Justin came up to me and put his hand on my shoulder.
His face was contorted into a sad grimace.
"what happened?"
"She's gone gray."
My blood ran cold. Ears ringing.
"What?"
"Someone found her in an alley way. She O.D.ed Gray. They don't know how long she's been out there for. She didn't stand a chance."
And I got so mad. Not even at my brother but at myself. But I lashed out on him.
"We should have went looking for her, Justin! She didn't come home for days and we didn't go out to find her?!"
"That's not our job Gray! I'm sorry but she made her choice and her choice was to get fucked up instead of taking care of her kids!"
"She's sick! It is our job!"
"Being sick in the head is so much fucking different Gray!"
I stormed out of the room, not bothering to listen to my brother anymore.
Why why why?
I needed her.
Out of all the times I needed her in my life, now is the most crucial.
And she's gone.
-
"I'm so sorry baby."
Lukas and I are laying side by side on my bed.
Our usual spot.
I told him what happened to my mom.
"It's whatever."
He reaches his hand out to my face. "It's not. You're not ok."
I push his hand away.
