He took a deep breath and sat down next to Destiny.
"I'm sorry. I guess it's my fault that you're here," He whispered. She turned her head and looked at him.
"That's okay. I don't mind." She shrugged and opened a book.
He looked at the cover.
'Breathless' By Colleen Hoover.
He smiled.
"You really do love to read, don't you?" He asked, She looked up from the book and frowned.
"Of course, I do."
"Hey, did I do something?" He asked, placing his hand over hers.
Mr. Andrews cleared his throat.
"No talking, please."
Destiny closed her book and looked down at his hand, which was over her's.
"No, It's just that... There is so much competition." She shrugged and stared at him with a helpless sort of expression in her eyes.
"What competition? I mean, what are you talking about?" He demanded.
"No talking, Mr. Luck."
"We'll just talk later." She whispered and opened her book again.
Okay, so he had precisely forty-five minutes to think about his next move.
She is jealous.
He called her 'his girl'.
This is going to be serious.
And he doesn't even love her.
He stole her first kiss.
I'm a horrible person.
But, I'm not ready.
I'm confused.
He shook his head and looked at her.
She's going to be so hurt.
Fifty minutes later they were in the parking lot.
"Yeah, so?" He asked, standing in front of her.
"Well, I told you. It's just, I didn't like the way Ashleigh kept looking at me. Like I stole something from her."
"Well, you didn't. Um...," He scratched the back of his neck.
"Were you a thing before?" She asked.
He looked down at his shoes.
Awesome shoes, bro.
"Elijah?"
He raised his eyes and looked at her.
"Well, We've kissed a couple of times."
Destiny flushed, and she looked like she was going to cry.
"I didn't know that." She whispered.
Elijah, now.
"Well, why should you? You're not my girlfriend."
She narrowed her eyes at him, then nodded.
"Yeah, you're right. I'm not."
He took a step towards her and grabbed her by her shoulders.
"Look, you've gotta give me some time. Okay? I know, I stole your first kiss. And for that I'm sorry. But, the thing is, I'm not ready for this. I just can't do this. Can't we be, like, more than friends, but not like... girlfriend-boyfriend?" He asked.
A hurt expression appeared in her eyes.
She shrugged her shoulders to get his hands away from them and took a step backward.
"I don't know. I need time to think." With that, she turned and walked away.
He took a deep breath and ran a hand through his hair.
Everly had just arrived home.
"Welcome home." Just as she started to climb the stairs she heard a strongly familiar voice behind her.
She turned and came face to face with...
Him.
"You!" She narrowed her eyes at him.
"How are you?" He asked, smiling.
"What are you doing here?" She demanded, folding her arms across her chest.
"Well, I live just across the street now, so came to meet my 'neighbors'." He shrugged.
"What? You're the one who shifted this morning?"
"Me and my family."
"Oh my god. AGAIN?" She clenched her fists.
"So you do remember me?" He demanded.
"How can I ever forget an asshole like you?" She asked.
"Everly! Language." Amanda called from the kitchen.
"Why did you even come back? You should've stayed where you were. Life was really good." With that, she stomped off.
Mason's smile disappeared.
How can a single stupid act, change somebody so drastically?
She slammed her bedroom door shut and sat down on the floor, her back against the door.
Her heart was beating really fast.
Does that means... She could see in his room through her window. Again?
She took a deep breath and tears formed in her eyes.
She's not going to do that, of course. After what he did five years ago.
What he had done years ago, had shattered her completely.
She was just an eleven years old little girl.
Who had a crush on her brother's best friend a.k.a Mason Smith
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Destiny sat down on her bed and covered her face in her hands.
After all these years, she finally thought that she had a chance in love.
She had a chance with the guy she had always loved.
And now he's telling her that he's not ready.
He's not ready for a relationship.
So what she had heard about him was correct?
He didn't believe in love. But he didn't tell her, because he didn't want to hurt her feelings.
A tear escaped her eyes and she took a deep breath.
Why was life doing this to her?
