MICK

-ˋˏ ༻✿༺ ˎˊ-

At long last, the day where the backup power would run out arrived, plunging the world in darkness, soon enough in a week or two the nuclear powerhouses would overheat and explode. But (y/n) and I would be gone by then. We gave ourselves a week and a half before we would say good-bye. It was a cruel game. Having everyone disappear overnight and then having a timer until your inevitable death. If it weren't for (y/n) I knew I'd be dead long before. She kept me going and I intend to let her know while time was running out.

As morning came and the sun rose again, we had to rely on primitive forces in order to survive. The power was out and that means no more heater, no more stove, no more light and no more internet, which means that if there were more of us outside, we had no chance of reaching out. It'll be just (y/n) and I. Honestly I was okay with that.

We had to go out and take as much candles, torches, flashlights and canned food in order to survive the week. So when we were both dressed from the long and cold night, (y/n) led me to the door, I threw her trench coat over her shoulders and helped her get into it. She turned around and pecked me sweetly on the lips,

"Thanks tiger," she smiled, I kissed her again, savoring her soft lips and the taste of her Chapstick.

"The least I can do," I replied with a wink.

After arriving at an unexplored store, we grabbed a trolley and went down to take the items we needed. We were cautious as to avoid any... attacks. I could feel (y/n)'s unease by the energy she gave off. She wasn't limping anymore but she still had trouble walking occasionally stopping to catch her breath. I followed her first to the crafty area, where we both loaded the cart with candles, matches, flashlights, and we even managed to find fuel somewhere. After getting what we needed we go to the hygiene section and filled the cart with stuff (y/n) needed and I glanced towards the pharmacy booth.

"Do you need anymore stuff for your leg?" I asked her while glancing back and forth to her and the shelves. She looked at me for a second and considered it.

"No," she shook her head, but then a gloomy look appeared on her face, "we'll need other things though." She went towards the counter and began looking for something but I didn't know what. I followed her and watched as her fingers skimmed the rows of boxes of medicine. Then she stopped at a bottle and took out two bottles. She turned around the pained look still plastered on her face, and showed me what she had in her hands. I read the label. Sleeping pills.

I reached over and grabbed her hand, squeezing it and taking it out of her hands, shoving it deep in the cart.

"Come, we still have time."

(y/n) then turned around and came back to where I was standing but something caught her eye. The sadness disappeared as fast as it had appeared and now her eyes twinkled with a mischievous glint. She held up a little blue box.

Oh.

Now it was my turn to smirk and I grabbed her by the waist,

"Is that so?" I asked her, going in to kiss her ear while I whispered some sweet nothings. I looked back into her eyes and saw that she was wildly blushing,

"Might as well make the rest of our time fun and exciting," she replied with a wink. (y/n) threw the box in the cart and started to walk towards the food aisle. I followed her close behind.

"Hey Mick, I need you to go check if you see any fresh food we can still save. Like potatoes or something? I'll be here towards the canned goods okay?"

I nodded and took off.  The whole store was dark despite it being quite sunny out. It was chilly and I had to rub my arms to keep myself warm. I wish I was home. Home. I chuckled to myself and walked towards the fresh foods. As I walked past I saw the fridges where they kept milk and other frozen food to see that it'll quickly rot away or became nasty. I decided to grab a few boxes that were easy to heat up even without power. Thank God for the fireplace. With my arms and hands full of boxes, I continued my journey to check out if there was any veggies or fruits we could snatch. I saw there was nothing much to take, flies were buzzing everywhere and it smelled awful. I gagged a couple times as the nauseous odor filled my nose. I was going to pack some potatoes in a bag when I hear a rumbling near the meat area.

A bear. Out of everything it could've been. It turned out to be a fucking bear. I staggered back, dropping my boxes out of surprise and fear. This could turn bad. Very bad. Then its head snapped towards me. I've been spotted. It groaned and stood on its hind legs. Its majestic stance told me it wasn't afraid of me. I tried to call out for (y/n) but no sound came out of my throat. I tried to stay as silent as possible, hoping it would just leave me alone.

"Mick? Mick where are you?" I heard (y/n) shout. The bear's ears perked and it turned its head toward the sound of her voice. I took the opportunity to walk slowly... faster... faster. Until I was running.

"(y/n)! We need to go there's a bear here!" I yelled, not knowing where she was and where I was either. I dropped everything and searched the aisle nothing. And the bear caught up. It was now stalking towards me and I tried my best to keep a safe between the beast and I. I knew I was going to die when it decided to bounce towards me. I couldn't out run it so I just fell back put my arm out, hoping it would save me from a little pain. Instead of a grizzly death, I heard something cock and a loud 'bang' coming from behind. And then some bellowing. I dared to open my eyes and saw a spot of red on the bear. And then, a few more appeared while the sound of bullets echoed in my ears. I stared at the scene, as I watched the bear slowly dropped dead. I heard the gun drop and someone falling to the floor next to me.

"Hey Mick, just look at me, breathe you're going to be ok," I watched as her voice slowly stopped my racing thoughts and everything started to refocus. I heard her okay, and she held my face, her eyes deep in mine,

"I'm here now, nothing's gonna hurt you ok?" she comforted me. I sighed and I wasn't sure what took me but I started sobbing. She held me in her arms while I cried on the floor. I tried to talk but only a few words came out,

"I thought- I thought I was going to-"

She then interrupted me and simply said,

"I'm not leaving you Mick, I told you I'd protect you."
