《 Chapter 2 》

The three of us have been walking around this place for about 30 minutes. We have discovered that the name of this city is Pale City. As we're walking, we have passed by many broken televisions and few clothes like we did before. Some of the buildings are weak enough to collapse while the others did. The walk is very silent, and aura of this city made it worse.

"Well, this city is quite big, isn't it? It's strange how there aren't any people here. Don't you think?" I ask the nomes who's still holding my hands during the walk. The one on the left kept on walking as the other on my right just looked at me. 'Right, they can't talk,' I mentally reminded myself, 'Welp, at least you tried your best making it less gloomy here.'

We kept on walking silently. I slowed down and stopped walking. The nomes noticed and looked at me confusingly. I sighed, "To be honest, I don't know how we can survive around here. We've been walking around here for half an hour and I'm slowly losing hope. This place is completely abandoned and I haven't seen anything that can at least help us survive here." I let go of the nomes' hand and sat down on the ground tiringly. "I'm sorry I drag you both here. You two wouldn't be here if it weren't for me."

As I held my head down, I felt a sudden hug right beside me. I looked to see a nome hugging me. The other nome grabbed my hand and looked at me. I can feel what it's trying to say to me is to not give up. I smiled, "You two are right, I shouldn't lose hope yet. How silly of me to give up that easily." I stood up from my spot and looked at them. "You know, since we'll be sticking together to survive this place, I should give you two a name. The thing is, I'm bad at making up names," I said to them. I put my hand on my chin to think of a name then look behind me to see a clothing shop. I thought of an idea and look at the two nomes behind me, "How about we check this place out to see if there's anything we can find useful? Then after that, I'll think of a name for you two." They both nodded and the three of us look for a way in. I found a hole on a wall that leads inside and we head in.

The shop is a mess. There are clothes on the floor along with hats. We all separated and scavenge around the area. As I search around, I've noticed the clothes are old and dusty. I found a flashlight on the floor and used it. Going through an open box filled with clothes, most of them were too big for me. That is until I found one that's perfectly fit. It was a grey hooded cape. I wore the cape and feel the fabric with my hands. It's in a good condition and it is perfect to keep me warm and dry from the rain. Going through the pile of clothing on the floor, I manage to find a belt with a brown pouch. Thinking it can come in handy for my flashlight, I put it on my waist.

Feeling satisfied of what I've found for myself, I decided to look around to give something for the nomes. After all, they're the reason why I kept on going. I need to give them a hat or an accessory to tell them apart. While searching, I felt my cape been pulled lightly and see one of the nome beside me. The nome is holding a paper boat right in front of me. "Oh? Is this for me?" I asked the nome. The nome nodded. I grabbed the paper boat from the nome and looked at it. "Where did you get a piece of paper for this?" I questioned. The nome pointed towards an open drawer. "Ah, I see. Thank you for the paper boat, "I smiled to the nome. Suddenly, an idea popped up in my head and put the paper boat on its cone head. The nome froze on its spot. "There, now it's a hat," I chirped. The nome stared at me for a few seconds and began to dance happily. I giggle at the adorable sight right in front of me.

"Now that you have a hat, I should think of a name for you," I told the nome. I looked around for some ideas and see an opened magazine. In the magazine, there's an advertisement of a chocolate chip cookies. "Chip... Yeah, Chip! How's that sound?" I asked the nome. The nome nodded cutely. I giggled, "Okay, Chip. Do you want to help me look for a hat for our other nome friend?" Chip nodded once more and we both started searching. Unfortunately, the hats are too big and there isn't anything much that are good enough for the nome. Giving up, me and Chip went back and look for the other nome. Few seconds later, we found the nome sitting on the floor, holding a teddy bear that's about its size.

"Hey, there you are! We've been looking for you!" I called out. The nome saw me with Chip and stood up. As we got closer, I saw something strange behind the nome. My flashlight was pointed towards the nome, but its shadow is different... "A boy?" I questioned out loud. The nome got confused and looked behind to see its shadow. The nome's shadow is a figure of a male child. I can see in the shadow that the boy has shaggy hair. My eyes widened, couldn't believe what I'm seeing. I walked a few steps away from Chip and pointed my flashlight towards it. And just like the other nome, Chip's shadow is a figure of a male child as well. But this time, his hair is curly. I was frozen in my spot, stunned and confused. How is this possible? Why are their shadows different from their actual figure? If their shadows showed that they are both boys, that means...

"You two were used to be children..." I blurted loud. Both of the nomes looked at each other then look at me. I look at Chip and see him nodding at me, telling me what I said was correct. That made me stunned even more. If these two were used to be children before, then the other nomes back in the maw were children as well. "B-But how? How did you two turned into nomes?" I asked them. Chip began to fidgeting his hand as the other nome held its head down. We all stood on our spot silently until I noticed the nome started doing hand gestures. I was confused at first until I realized he's doing sign language. Unfortunately, I don't know sign language. "I-I'm sorry... I don't know sign language," I apologized to the nome. The nome stop and look down to his feet.

I sighed and walk towards to the nome. I kneeled down in front him and hugged him. The nome froze from his spot. "I'm sorry that you both turned into nomes. Even though I don't know how you turned into one, I can tell it was tragic. What's more important is that you're still here, alive. Nome or not, I'll always consider you as a friend, both of you," I comforted the nome. He stood there silently, then lifted his hand and hugged me back. Embracing the hug, Chip came up to us and join in the hug. The three of us grouped hug for a minute.

I slowly let go of the hug and smiled at them. I look at the teddy bear beside us and examined it. The bear looked a bit sad, yet creepy. One of the eye buttons have been taken off and its arm was ripped off. It also had a purple bow tied around its neck. I unwrapped the ribbon from the bear and tied it to the nome in a bow. "There, that should do it," I said. "I think I know a name for you. How about Ted?" I asked the nome. The nome shrugged. "Alright, Ted it is. Welcome to the family Ted," I gave him a closed- eye smile.

Then, I noticed he's looking at the bow and holding the ribbon. "What's wrong, is it the bow?" I asked. Ted looked away shyly. "Don't you like it?" I questioned again. He didn't answer. "Is it the color?" He slowly nodded. I giggled at his response. "You know... I heard that the color purple represents bravery and courage. I think it really suits you well Ted," I grinned. I stood up on my spot and sighed, "Since you don't like the color, I think there should be some other things around here or ribbons in different colors." When I was about to walk away, I felt my hand been grabbed. I turned my head to see it was Ted stopping me. "What is it, Ted?" I asked him. He shook his head. "Huh, what are you talking about?" I pointed to his purple ribbon. "Your ribbon? You want to keep it?" He nodded shyly. I grinned and chuckled, "Okay Ted, if you say so."

Ted rubbed his cone head then looked at Chip who was beside me, holding my hand. "Oh yes. Ted, his name is Chip. I thought of that name for him," I told Ted. Ted turned to Chip and held his hand up towards him. Instead of shaking Ted's hand, Chip spread his arms out and quickly hugged him. Ted jumped from Chip's actions and pats his back, after processing what happened. I watched them both, feeling my heart melt. 'Look at my babies hugging each other,' I silently squealed. The two slowly parted and look at me. I cleared my throat, "I believe we're done here, correct?" I asked them. Both of them nodded in response. "What do you boys say we explore a bit more and look for a place to stay for the night?" They nodded once again and held onto my hand. I smiled at them and headed out to the hole where we got in.

We explore around the streets for a bit and went inside to a building that we found stable. Checking nobodies inside, we stay inside an apartment for the night.

A/N: Aye! Chapter 2 is done! To be honest, I spent most of my time on this fanfiction than any of my classes, wack. Also, I just realized as I typed this chapter... How does one pat nome's cone head??? Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this chapter!
