Good thing it was about lunchtime. Emma and I walked into the large limestone brick dining hall, grandiose steel chandeliers draping from the ceiling. A small wooden stage was built at the front of the room, a small spruce podium standing right in the center. The windows surrounding the cafeteria were beautiful stained glass scenes depicting great stories and legends from every ancient text to exist. It was indeed a beautiful school, and I had never appreciated it. Maybe I should start, since class is going to become a living hell.
"Norman!" Emma shouted, skipping the white haired boy's side. His pale face was planted straight into the wooden table. "Are... Are you dead?" She giggled, poking his shoulder. He mumbled something like a "God, no," before starting to groan sadly and tiredly. I also wanted to laugh, but I restrained myself. I knew what having a bad day looked like. I took a seat next to him, patting his platinum colored head. "What happened? What's wrong?" He stood his head up, glancing at me with one of his ocean blue eyes. "My room mate." "I thought you weren't supposed to have one this year." Emma commented, taking a seat in front of us. Norman nodded his head, sighing softly. "I wasn't supposed to, but apparently this guy wanted to move in." I tilted my head. "Who?" Emma and I asked in unison. She giggled, holding her hand up for a high-five. Norman's eyes widened, his surprised gaze looking right through me. I turned around, my own heart pounding out of my chest. Can this day get any worse?
He was someone I used to know. Someone I used to know very well. Someone I spent my childhood with, longer than Emma and Norman. "Ray?" I muttered, watching him plod nonchalantly into the hall. His dark gray eyes were glued straight forward, not giving anything around him a second glance. "Wow, he even walks like an asshole." Emma snorted, covering her mouth. Norman flicked her forehead, glaring at her. The silly orange haired girl apologized, shoving her face into her hands. It's not like this was my first time seeing him in years. Actually, I saw him quite often. We shared a class or two every year, always sitting on opposite sides. I felt some resentment rise into my chest. Today was just smashing. Marvelous. Superb. I get to relive my parent's murders in a class, my sworn nemesis is going to be my best friend's room mate, school is starting the day after tomorrow, and I'm still fucking hungry! Norman seemed to notice my bad mood and patted my head gently. My stomach grumbled loudly as he did, sending both Emma and him bawling. "Bwahahaha!" She howled, pointing at me. "You sound like a bear!" Norman, who was a little bit more composed, covered his blushing face with a hand, snickering as quietly as he could. "Let's- Let's get you some food," He chuckled, standing up. I followed him to the lunch bar, face warm with embarrassment. Another distant laugh attracted my gaze. It was him. That stupid black haired weirdo who hurt me five years ago. He was sitting alone, but seemed to be having the time of his life.
I wanted to punch that smile off of his face. After leaving me in the dust after my parent's death he can still find it in him to smile and smirk? How sick. I tried my best to get his stupid face out of my head. Tomorrow was going to be our last day of summer break. Emma and I are going to get out wands made, and it's going to go great. It'll be fun. I mean, what can go wrong with a wand appraisal?
