Was this the light of my life?

Tutoring sessions with Ray? I peered at his still reading face from behind my textbook. His eyelashes were just slightly bent downward, his full attention on whatever pyro spell guide he was trying to learn. His lips muttered each word softly, every movement making my heart beat a little faster.

Wow, y/n. Just wow. Fall in love with the guy who abandons you as kids, and is a complete asshole to you now. And his Mom might be out to kill you! That's a bonus!

Ray's deep silver eyes darted upwards, instantly meeting mine. "Can I help you?" He almost chuckled, but kept his composure calm. The pit of my stomach tightened, an unbearable heat washing over my face. "N-Nothing!" I replied, hiding behind my book. He scoffed lightly, returning to his own reading.

Ray wasn't mine. He liked someone else.

Well, why would he like me? I could quite literally be the only witch in the world who can't perform pyro magic. And Ray deserved someone who could do everything, just like him.

He helped me with Zack because he didn't care about me. He cared about teaching me, about being a good student. Maybe I'm still mistaking that teacher-student guardianship right now. But at the very least, we were friends, right?

"Is it true?" He asked, completely throwing me off my train of thought. "W-What?" I stuttered, obviously startled. A strangely serious look settled in those silver eyes. "That you slept with Nigel. That you're with Nigel, I guess."

"Fuck no!" I whisper screamed, remembering we were in the library. "Please tell me you didn't actually believe Emma. Ray, you idiot, I swear to God-" He protested immediately. "Well she's your best friend she would which guy you're with!" "And it wouldn't be Nigel!" I almost laughed at the absurdity of our conversation. "He's- He's weird. And- And you're- you're jealous!" I stick my finger into his left cheek, the usually pale boy turning redder and redder by the second.

Could it be true? I really was just teasing. But if Ray did care whether or not I was with a boy-

"I'm not jealous. I just don't like Nigel." He quickly recovered, taking a deep breath and returning to his composed self. "I don't care who you're dating, y/n. I just would rather it not be that stupid hat boy. He's a bad student and a bad example. You're my responsibility so I would advise you not to hang around bad examples."

There it is again. Not the friend-zone, but the student-zone. My life is a tragedy. I swear.

"Well, I can separate my private life and my school life, dummy."

That's ironic of me to say, actually. Ray was my school life. Now he's everything in between. His messy black hair shifted with every movement he made. And I hated the way it made my heart beat.

"Stay away from that kid." Nigel had said. Maybe- Maybe I should. For my own good. For my own heart.

"Study time is over," I said, packing up my things. Ray glanced at the library clock, noting the time. It was indeed five, and he followed me as I shuffled my way outside. "I'll see you at the cafeteria," he called, walking in the direction of the boy's dorms. I forced a smile out, waving goodbye and headed the opposite way.

Sorry Ray, but I don't think you'll be seeing me much at all.

I quickly threw my things into my room, giving Emma a quick hello and goodbye. "y/n, where are you going in such a rush?" She shouted, poking her head outside the dorm's door. I slipped on a black hoodie as I replied, "Meeting someone, won't be there for dinner, bye!"

I snuck my way into the boy's dorms, shoving my hair into my t-shirt and pulling the hood over my eyes. 3-G is on the fourth floor. Just rooms away from Ray and Oliver's 3-B. I clicked my tongue, hurriedly running past the few people making their way in and out of the tower. I glanced at the dark oak door hiding Ray. He was probably changing and getting ready to vibe with his friends.

Was this betrayal? Was this going to hurt him?

Well, then it would call us even.

What I needed to focus on was survival. Survival for Zack, survival for elves. Survival for me. And right now, Ray was a threat to it all. Something in the pit of my something tightened at that thought. The thought of giving up Ray. I don't think its something I'm ready to do either, after all, it still feels like I've only just got him back.

But right now, it's time to learn real magic. The magic this body was born to perform.

I clutched the black wand in my pocket a little bit tighter, my left fist knocking lightly on room 3-G. "Nigel, it's me." I whispered, the door opening with a creak. The blond haired boy greeted me with a frown, grabbing my wrist and pulling me inside. "Okay, y/n. Are you ready to learn forbidden magic?"
