"Kyo! Wake up, we've got a big day ahead of us!" Midoriya said with a wide smile as he opened the door.
The night before the teen had been moved from the cell to an empty dorm in U.A for the plan 1-A had proposed to integrate the 15 year old into normal life. He would have 1 day as a normal teen, getting ready, going to school, hanging out after and maybe even some homework. Of course he wouldn't participate in hero training but otherwise Kyo would be partaking in every part of the school day with 1-A as his chaperones.
So Midoriya walked into the nearly empty dorm room to discover Kyo on the ground with tears in his eyes. He didn't look awake yet but he was mumbling 'sorry' over and over again. "Kyo?" Izuku asked, cautiously shaking his shoulder.
Suddenly the teen shot up and slammed back into the wall. "Are you alright? Did you fall out of bed? You're all tangled in the blankets." Midoriya commented, trying to lighten the mood. Kyo sighed and wiped his eyes.
"I don't like beds or bedrooms." He said simply, standing up with the blanket still wrapped around his shoulders "Does this place have a bathroom? As much as I hate those I need to wash my face.". Midoriya nodded and pointed down the hall, then added "You hate bedrooms and bathrooms, is there any part of the dorm you like?".
Kyo scoffed "I don't exactly like the world as a whole, bathrooms are just an unfortunate necessity." he said, dragging the blanket all the way into the bathroom and locking the door behind him. Midoriya thought it was awkward to wait outside but he didn't have a choice, they had to monitor Kyo at all hours of the day if they were to pull off their plan.
It was ambitious, trying to get someone to not become a villain through showing them how great normality was. Midoriya knew it was likely that the league would come looking for Kyo soon and they needed him to be 100% on the side of living a normal life otherwise they would lose an innocent teen to the villains.
Meanwhile in the bathroom Kyo was still a little upset it hadn't been Shigaraki who woke him up. He was the only member of the league to be allowed in Kyo's room except for when Bakugou was locked up there. As much as he joked about the villain becoming an older brother figure Kyo supposed he had let himself believe that while he was staying there. They had gone shopping together, watched more movies when no one else wanted to see the kids ones and Shigaraki had taught him how to play video games which he now loved. When Kyo had opened his eyes and not seen the familiar light blue hair and red eyes a feeling of disappointment had set into his stomach.
Besides, here he was surrounded by false heroes. Especially Eraserhead, he had known about the brothel and what had he done? Nothing. If the villains found him first so be it.
Breakfast was awkward too. Kyo had discovered he really liked cereal but he didn't recognize any of the boxes so he ended up having bread. It didn't taste very good but like fuck was he going to ask a mini hero for help.

Now, Kyo had never been to school before. The most he had even gone outside was to wander around the red light district until one of the workers came and dragged him back inside. This knowledge was important as through not going to school Kyo missed some essential things.
It looked to 1-A that Kyo couldn't care less about school, at least on the surface. The more glances they took at him the more they noticed he looked anxious, on edge. His bored looking eyes followed every movement made by Aizawa. Whether it was turning around to ask a question or banging the desk to wake up several students who weren't paying attention. Kyo would flinch every time without fail.
Aizawa himself noticed the strange behavior and chocked it up to being below grade level. They hadn't expected someone who spent most of their life in a brothel having who knows what done to them would be at the same level as students in one of Japan's most prestigious schools. He was also a year younger than the other students. Nezu had been the one to mention that it would be important to help Kyo out throughout the day so that he could have the satisfaction of understanding new and interesting things.
No one thought the behavior was because they were studying classical japanese and Kyo couldn't fucking read.
What? No one had ever taught him. Truthfully he couldn't even write 'Kyo' and had barely ever held any pencils in his life. Logically he had known that it was important but he had just never asked. He spent most of his time sleeping or using his quirk to heal both customers and his older sisters.
There had to be a way he could get through the day without telling anyone, right? Its not like he thought it was a massive deal before but somehow it seemed like you really needed to be able to read to do school.
"Does anyone know what this graph would look like in three months?". Ah, math class, sweet, sweet escape from reading.
To everyone's shock Kyo raised his hand with a relieved expression and walked up to the board. He scribbled a quick line onto the end of the graph and gave a quick explanation before sitting down. They were pretty shocked to say the least. Little did they know that math was something that came quickly to someone trying to figure out how many customers it would take to buy their freedom.
Kyo was having the time of his life in math. Okay, that was lie. The time of his life was watching his first movie but other than that math was a close second. Everything had a right and a wrong answer, no grey areas. It made a hell of a lot more sense than classical japanese, that was for sure.
---- ---- ---- ---- ----- -----
"Uh, I'll just have what your having!" Kyo told Midoriya with a smile. As the day dragged on it was getting harder and harder to hide the fact he couldn't read or write. It didn't help that all of 1-A gave him dirty looks when he didn't participate in any activity that involved writing. He was supposed to, but how the fuck was he supposed to say he couldn't without looking pathetic?
Midoriya led him to a table full of his classmates. There was the brown haired girl, glasses boy, icyhot burn cream and the green haired frog girl. Needless to say he had some not so good experiences with the girls in the past and he was not looking forward to this.
"Kyo!" The brown haired girl suddenly said "Ah wait. I feel so weird calling you by your first name when we don't really know each other, do you have a last name?". The black haired teen smiled through the grimace.
"Nope. Its the only name I've ever know." He said simply. "But Mr. Aizawa said..." The girl began but quickly glasses boy cut her off. Kyo eyed them suspiciously but ignored the comment in favor of eating whatever food Midoriya had picked.
He could feel the eyes of his 'classmates' on him as he tried to eat as quickly and neatly as humanly possible. "What?" He said between mouthfuls, glaring at them "Kurogiri looks at me just like that when I eat, lay off.". What did the smog villain call it again? Ah, food insecurity, that was it. Honestly everyone acted like they were fed so often they could just throw some of it away. It was weird.
Uraraka recognized Kyo's behavior in the same way Kurogiri had. She had grown up in poverty so it would be hard not to recognize when someone wasn't fed regularly. It would explain why Kyo was so much smaller than them when he was only a year younger.
As they were finishing their food Iida handed Kyo a sheet of paper. "You're going to be with Aizawa while we're in heroics. As the class president it is my job to hand you this form that will tell him what questions you are comfortable answering right now." He said robotically as he handed Kyo a pen. The 15 year old held it with clumsy fingers as his heart pounded out of his chest.
He didn't even know what the first question was asking. Fuck.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Oh boy am I tired. I wrote most of this today and chapter 24 of Shatter which at this point still isn't finished yet!
I don't really have a lot to say except I love having such a demanding stress reliever. Also to be noted is Kyo is my first character to like math and I was reticent to add that as a trait because I fucking hate math.
BTW if you guys could wish me some luck for my test tomorrow it would be well appreciated cause, you know, I'm writing instead of studying (╥︣ ╥)
