"Jennifer, it's going to be fine," my dad assured me.
"Sure," I mumbled, sarcastically.
I hopped out of the car, and walked around to the trunk to get my bags. I popped open the trunk, and my dad gave me a side hug. I sighed and grabbed my blue duffel bag.
"Why'd you have to get a job all the way in Oklahoma?" I complained.
"I'm sorry, it's the only thing that was available," my dad answered.
My dad got a new job in a small town called Tulsa. I don't know much about this place, except that it's in the right corner of Oklahoma. I never thought much about moving, I loved my life in New Jersey. I had friends, and I kind of enjoyed going to school. But now, I have no friends here and I don't know anybody.
I dragged my feet around to the front of the car. I stood in front of a run-down, paint-chipped, old house. It was really small and it looked like nobody had lived there for years. I walked into the house and walked to what appeared to be my bedroom.
There was a bed smack in the middle of the room, and a dresser and closet. It seemed to be the nicest room in the house, which is nice. I folded my clothes and put them into my dresser, neatly, and changed into a tank top and jean shorts.
I walked back into the living room, and started shuffling through the boxes. I grabbed a bottle of water and started chugging it.
"Jen, why don't you go explore and see what it's like around here? It's a beautiful day outside!" My dad exclaimed.
"I'm helping you unpack, Dad, it's fine," I answered. Honestly, I wanted to go outside, it was really hot in this house.
"Go on! I've got this," my dad offered.
"Oh alright," I mumbled, sighing, "I'll walk around and see if there's any jobs around here."
"You don't need a job! You're a kid, run free!" My dad said, chuckling.
I sighed and walked out the door.
I walked around the neighborhood, and it seemed that we had the nicest house. I heard a few voices behind me, and I spun around, quickly. There was a group of teenage boys, messing around in the streets. They were following shortly behind me. One of the taller boys spotted me and whispered something to another boy. Soon, they were all staring at me. I turned back around, and continued walking.
The boys were still laughing and being loud, but I just tried to ignore them. Before I knew it, the boys were right next to me.
"What's a pretty broad like you walking around by yourself?" One of the boys asked me, blowing out a puff of cigarette smoke.
"I'm minding my own business, something that you don't seem to be able to do," I retorted.
The rest of the guys laughed.
"You should be careful walking around on your lonesome. Pretty girls are targets 'round here," the boy said.
"I can see that," I snarled, pointing to the boy.
The guy rolled his eyes and smoked his cigarette again.
"Anyway, who are you?" A different boy asked.
"Yeah, I ain't never seen you around before," added a different guy.
The boy I was talking to earlier nodded, "I'd remember seein' a fly broad like you if I did."
I sighed. "I just moved here," I explained.
"Ah, so you're new?" Another boy asked.
"Isn't that what I just said?" I countered.
