My eyes drifted open and my heart immediately warmed. Ponyboy and I were going on our first real date today. I stretched and crawled out of bed. I walked over to my closet and fumbled through my clothes. I picked some blue jeans and a white T-shirt. I grabbed my black leather jacket and pulled it over my shirt. I put on some mascara and dabbed on a little blush. I never usually wear makeup, just on special occasions. I threw my hair up into a bun and walked out of my room.
My dad was sitting at the dining room table, sipping a cup of coffee. I still hadn't told him about me and Ponyboy, I don't think he would be too happy. It had only been 5 days since I got beat up.
"Morning, Dad," I called, opening the fridge.
"Good morning. Your eye is lookin' a little better today," he said.
"Is it? That's good."
"You goin' somewhere?"
"Uh, what do you mean?" I asked.
"You look extra dolled up today. You meeting someone or something?" Dad asked, taking a sip of his coffee.
"Uh... yeah," I admitted, sighing.
"Ooh, who is he?"
"Um... Ponyboy," I whispered.
My dad didn't say anything, and I could tell he was looking at me, but I was staring at the floor. "I know."
"You know?" I asked, looking up.
"I could tell you two had something from the start. So, you two official or what?"
"Oh my gosh, Dad!" I whined.
"Are you?"
"Yeah..." I mumbled.
"Great! Well, you two have fun! Not too much fun, ya hear?" He called.
"Dad! Gross!" I shouted, walking out the door.
I made my way to the Curtis house, because Ponyboy said he had something special planned. He told me we were going to spend the whole day together, and I was beyond excited.
I burst into the Curtis house, everyone sitting in the living room besides Dally and Ponyboy. Everyone turned around to face me, and I walked in.
"Hey! You ready for today?" Soda asked.
"Who told you?"
"Ponyboy, who else? He couldn't be more excited!"
I sighed with a smile. I sat down on the couch next to Soda, and Ponyboy walked into the room. He was wearing a nice button-down shirt with jeans. He had his hair perfectly greased, not a hair out of place. He walked in with a huge smile on his face.
"Aww, look at m'boy!" Sodapop exclaimed.
"Look at the kid, wow!" Two-Bit teased. He started to get up and mess up Ponyboy's hair, but Pony blocked his arm.
"Not today, Two."
I giggled and Pony walked up to me. He held out his hand and helped me off the couch. "You ready?" He asked.
"Yes," I replied, smiling.
"Bye guys!" He called, walking us out.
"Hey hey hey, not so fast..." Darry called.
We spun around to face Darry who was glaring at us.
"You two better be here before dark, ya hear? You better not cause any trouble, do you understand me? Ponyboy, you know what will happen if you get in trouble with the fuzz. You and Soda'll get the boys home, ya remember?" He lectured. He kept going on and on about the rules, but I wasn't really listening. I was on cloud nine just thinking about Ponyboy.
"Don't worry, Darry. We won't do anything bad!" Ponyboy argued.
"You better not," Darry said, coldly.
"Aw, lay off the kids, Darry," Soda said.
"Alright. Get out of here, you two. Have fun!" He called.
We ran out the door, out onto the street.
"So what are we doing?" I asked him, smiling.
"I can't tell you."
"Why not?" I begged.
"It's a surprise," he told me. He grabbed my hand and interlocked our fingers. He brushed his thumb across the back of my hand.
We walked down the road, in silence, but not awkward silence. It never really was awkward between us. Before I knew it, we were standing in the vacant lot, with a picnic placed on the ground.
I smiled at the picnic he had set up for us. "When did you do this?"
"This morning," he answered.
"You did all this for me?" I asked.
"Of course, beautiful." My eyes immediately flew away from the picnic and to Ponyboy. He was smiling at me, and his face was red. His words kept repeating in my head. 'Beautiful.' He called me beautiful. I don't remember the last time anyone called me beautiful. Except for the many catcallers on the streets and Socs who don't care one bit about me.
I crashed my lips into his, and he kissed back right away. He put his hands on my back, and I put mine on his face. Soon, we let go, needing air. I rested my forehead on his, looking into his eyes.
We sat down across from each other to eat the picnic. He handed me a sandwich and he ate his. We ate in silence, watching the clouds and listening to police sirens in the distance.
. . .
"What's next?" I asked. We had just finished eating and cleaning up the picnic.
"Wanna see a movie?" He asked me.
"Sure."
He grabbed my hand and we walked to the theatre. We sat down next to each other and he held my hand through the entire thing. We watched 'Gidget Goes To Rome', a Paul Newman movie.
The movie was pretty boring to me, but Ponyboy seemed really interested in it. I stayed quiet, just enjoying Ponyboy's presence.
After the movie was finished, we walked to the Dingo for a milkshake. We walked in and we searched around for a table. I noticed an empty one near a window, and Ponyboy saw it too. We looked at each other, knowingly. That was the table we sat at before he confessed his feelings for me. We nodded, giggling a little bit. We walked over to the table and sat down.
"I like this table," he said to me.
"I do too."
