In Ponyboy's Arms

Pony and I headed towards the Dingo. We didn't really talk, but the silence wasn't awkward. My stomach had the feeling again, and my ears felt hot.

We slid into a booth across from each other. We ordered our usuals: a hamburger with a Coke. He looked at me and looked like he was about to say something. Then, he cleared his throat and looked away.

Our burgers came, and we ate them quickly. We decided to walk home, we didn't want the gang to get worried about us.

"Come on," Ponyboy said, walking towards the door of the Dingo.

I followed him, and he led me outside. The sun was just about done setting and it was about 8:30. We walked down the road, and we were by the park.

Then, we heard a rumble of a car. Ponyboy cussed under his breath and grabbed my hand. He pulled me over to the park and we hid behind a bush.

"Shh..." he whispered.

I nodded, and he held my hand. I looked down and smiled. His hands were cold, but they felt nice.

Soon, we heard the car speed by the park, and down the road. Ponyboy peered over the bush to see if the coast was clear.

"We're good," he said, helping me up.

We were back on the road, walking home. It was silent between us, not awkward, but nice. I still felt that feeling in my stomach that I always do when I'm around him.

"Jennifer?" Pony asked.

"Yes?"

"I have to tell you something. And I don't know how you're going to react," he said, seriously.

He stopped walking, and I did too. We were standing facing each other in the middle of the street. I was looking up at him, and he was glancing down at me.

"Okay?" I said, suspiciously.

He took a deep breath and looked down. "Jennifer... I really like you. I know you probably already know this, because I--I'm not very good at hiding it, I guess. I don't know if you like me back... it's fine if you don't, but I felt like I had to tell you this."

My heart dropped and my face felt like it was on fire. My mouth opened, and I was staring at him with a blank expression. I didn't mean to, I was just shocked.

"It's fine if you don't like me..." he mumbled.

"No! I do," I exclaimed.

"You do?"

"Yeah. Since the first second I saw you, you were different from the others. I like you too, Pony... a lot."

He looked at me, stunned. We both started to lean in at the same time, tilting our heads to the side slightly. He crashed his lips into mine and we kissed. It felt different than the other time, because this time I felt like I meant it. When we pulled away, I looked at him and smiled. I giggled a little and my cheeks got really hot.

Ponyboy grabbed my hand and we made our way back home. He brushed his thumb up and down against my hand. I smiled and glanced down at my shoes.

We barged into the Curtis' house, and Ponyboy let go of my hand. Only Sodapop and Darry were sitting in the living room. I guess everyone had left after the movie.

"There you are," Darry said as we walked in.

"I told you they'd be fine, Darry," Soda said from the couch. I turned to face him and he winked at me. I giggled and looked away.

"Well, I heard the Mustang and I was worried..." Darry mumbled.

"You always worry, Darry," Ponyboy said. He led me to sit down on the couch with him. I sat in between him and Soda.
