"No!" (Y/n) shouted as Kara lunged at her legs, first kicking in the air. As quick as a flash (Y/n) spun into defensive action.
Kara's right foot was leading the charge, (Y/n) planting both her feet firmly on the ground; with a sturdy determination, she grabbed the foot and twisted it.
Kara's face twitched with the realization that she was pretty much screwed.
Soon Kara found herself face down on the ground with (Y/n) on top of her. Her head was locked in a firm headlock.
"You see why you never ever lead with your feet." (Y/n) chastised.
"Yeah."
"Once you're in flight about to attack, you have no control, especially with your speed." (Y/n), reprimanded the superhero, still unmoving. "Now you are at the ultimate disadvantage."
"Yeah." Kara gritted her teeth. "How come you're so strong?"
"It's the only sign of my superpowers." (Y/n) remarked, quickly standing up. "There you are, you are so out of practice with hand to hand combat you are reckless and let your foolishness guide you."
Kara jumped to her feet, dusting off the debris from the floor that gathered on her super suit.
"I know; you keep saying this." Kara pouted. "I rely too much on my powers."
"You do." (Y/n) said blandly. "On Krypton, do you think I had any powers to help me?"
"No." Kara shrugged.
"Exactly, I had nothing but my own physical strength. I was taught by the greatest fighters in Krypton, and now I am teaching you their ways." (Y/n) said as she sized Kara up.
Kara felt the full impact of those words. This woman had been her idol; she was the foundation on which her family-based their moral integrity.
Suddenly Kara was hit to realize that everything (Y/n) knew and had been taught had been lost to time long before Krypton had been destroyed and scattered to the four vectors.
It was deeply humbling for Kara. There was no other way to explain it; she knew how truly privileged she was for (Y/n) to pass on any of her wisdom.
"Now, it is true in a battle against a human foe this will not trouble you." (Y/n) said, rubbing her hands together and walking around Kara. "But let's not get into bad habits because the moment you are against a foe who is equal to your strength or superior to it, then you will be in trouble."
Kara nodded her head.
"You must also never underestimate your enemy no matter how lowly you think they are." (Y/n) said; she was now standing behind Kara and had placed a hand on her shoulder. "Only the arrogant do that, and it leads them to disaster."
"Is that what happened during the clone wars?" Kara asked softly.
"In a way, it was." (Y/n) replied softly. "Arrogance will be your number one enemy in every battle you face."
"Huh." Kara was confused.
(Y/n) pulled her hand away and moved to stand in front of her. "You will always be your biggest enemy." (Y/n) said. "What you tell yourself is what determines how you succeed or fail."
"So being confident is a bad thing?" Kara asked, puzzled.
"No, but confidence and arrogance are not the same things." (Y/n) said knowingly. "Confidence is when you know you are capable but admit you can fail, and that's okay; arrogance is when you believe you're the best. Better than anyone else."
