It was late when (Y/n) drove their silver Ford focus rental car into the driveway of the cottage Lena had rented for their stay.
The drive from the airport had seemed endless, but the city that flowed by had swiftly turned into green countryside had been fantastic scenery.
The vibrant green fields filled with sheep that bloated as they drove by (Y/n) were so used to Metropolis's bustling chaos this seemed like another world.
(Y/n) parked the car and switched off the engine before turning to face her girlfriend. Lena's face was obscured by the darkness but (Y/n) could see the firm line of resignation on her lips.
It seemed strange to think Lena came from this place where time had seemed to stop; Lena was Lena freaking Luthor, but how would she have been if her mother never died? If she had grown up here in this rural town in Ireland, would her eyes still have grown so bright?
Would her hips still have swayed sexily to an invisible tune as she walked by in skirts that hugged her delicious curvaceous figure?
"I'll get the bags from the back, you go and take a look inside. I hope it's as nice as the pictures on the website, and we didn't get screwed." (Y/n) told Lena. "I don't need to be chased out of there in the middle of the night by a gang of irate spiders."
"Where do you get your ideas from?" Lena laughed.
"You'd be surprised." (Y/n) smiled, reaching across to kiss Lena quickly on her lips, but Lena anticipated the move and wanted the moment to last longer.
Lena cupped (Y/n)'s face between her hands and held her in place, deepening their kiss and engulfing in the feeling of being wanted, of being loved. Lena hadn't experienced those feelings since her mother.
"I guess you've forgiven me for my feud with the toddler in the plane seat." (Y/n) grinned when they moved apart.
"I'm still touch and go on that one, don't push your luck." Lena raised teasingly.
"If I don't push my luck, how will I ever get lucky ever again?"
"Get the bags, and you'll see," Lena replied as she opened the door and was hit by a wave of freezing cold air. "Oh my gosh, it's freezing out here."
"Don't worry, babe, I'll save you." (Y/n) said seriously, pushing open the door and rushing round to face her trembling girlfriend. "I may not have all my powers, but I can still sweep you off your feet, Ms. Luther."
Lena chuckled as (Y/n) picked her up and, with ease, carried her to the door.
"You keep saying that, but I think you have different powers," Lena said, looking into (Y/n)'s eyes. "You find a way to love me, and that's difficult."
"Aw, hun, loving you is the easiest thing I've ever done. It's got nothing to do with powers." (Y/n) smiled, kissing the tip of Lena's nose.
"I'm gonna need you to unlock the door there, babe." (Y/n) said as she realized her hands were already full.
Lena did the honors; she fished the keys from her bag and unlocked the door.
"Oh, I get to carry you over the threshold." (Y/n) smugly said as they entered the hallway.
The cottage wasn't dark and bleak; a soft lamp lit up the hallway that made it cozy, it was warm, and there was the scent of freshly picked lavender.
"I'll get the bags." (Y/n) said, putting Lena on her feet and rushing back out into the cool night air.
Lena felt the biting cold air escape inside through the open door. She pulled her coat around her and moved further into the cottage.
In the living room, a vase of lavender sat on the coffee table; the room was filled with the sweet aroma that had welcomed them.
