Ulaalsias POV
I was woken up when the entire company came to a stop. Again my fave smashed right into Kilis back. He laughed at me "What does your face have against my back?" I laughed and rubbed my sore nose. I was still half asleep when I clambered off of the horse. We set up a camp for the night and Thorin sent me to get the firewood.
I slyly caught my uncle feeding his pony an apple and muttering sweet words to it. He looked so adorable. I handed Bofur the fire wood and I sat down and helped with the dinner.
Time skip
After our dinner we heard a loud screech that pierced the night. I saw that all the company had terrified looks plastered on their faces. My uncle face turned completely pale. "What was that?" Kili looked up from the fire to him and then to me.
"Orcs." Members of the company shook their heads and continued their own business.
My uncle didn't fully understand. "Orcs?" Kili nodded."Throat-cutters. There'll be dozens of them out there. The lone-lands are crawling with them. They strike in the wee small hours when everyone's asleep. Quick and quiet, no screams. Just lots of blood." Fili, him and I started to snigger at each other. Thorin turned round and snapped. "You think that's funny? You think a night raid by Orcs is a joke?" We quickly stopped laughing, I'm pretty sure we all felt ashamed. Thorin turned back round and continued to gaze into the night "We didn't mean anything by it." Kili tried to apologise to his uncle. "You know nothing of the world." Thorin didn't have to to look at him. I put my arm round Kili to show my support. I know it wasn't his fault. Balin patted him on the shoulder.
"Don't mind him, laddie. Thorin has more cause than most to hate Orcs. After the dragon took the Lonely Mountain..King Thror tried to reclaim the ancient Dwarf kingdom of Moria. But our enemy had got there first. Moria had been taken by legions of Orcs... led by the most vile of all their race: Azog the Defiler. The giant Gundabad Orc... had sworn to wipe out the line of Durin. He began...by beheading the king." We all sat down by the by the fireplace and continued to listen to the story."Thrain, Thorin's father, was driven mad by grief. He went missing. Taken
prisoner or killed...we did not know. We were leaderless. Defeat and death...were upon us. That is when I saw him. A young Dwarf prince......facing down the pale Orc.
He stood alone against this terrible foe. His armor rent, wielding nothing but an oaken branch as a shield. Azog the Defiler learned that day... that the line of Durin
would not be so easily broken. Our forces rallied...wand drove the Orcs back. And our enemy... had been defeated. But there was no feast... nor song that night...for our dead were beyond the count of grief. We few had survived. And I thought to myself then... there is one who I could follow. There is one..I could call king."I imagined that Thorin had been through some tough times but I never knew how traumatic it had been for him. "And the pale Orc?" I questioned Balin but Thorin turned and joined us.
"He slunk back into the hole whence he came. That filth died of his wounds long ago. Everyone get some rest. We are leaving at first light." I laid down beside my uncle. He wished me goodnight before turning on his side. I gazed upon Thorin as he watched over the company before tiredness took over my body.Authors note
