April 20th 2008 S.H.I.E.L.D Building, Unknown Location
White walls. Clinical lighting.
A single bed with a cheap mattress.
Aria awoke, groggy, as though she'd slept for days. Her eyes were half glued shut and she wore the same clothes she had when she'd returned home and...
And found a one-eyed man in her living room and...
Been drugged and kidnapped?
"Good morning, Aurelia."
Aria visibly jumped, as her attention snapped to a woman standing in the corner, leaning casually against the wall. Had she been there this whole time? How could a woman blend into a wall? Especially a woman like that... She was drop dead gorgeous, curly red hair and a pleased smile on her face. She wore a tight black body suit, Aria wasn't sure what to class her outfit as... a onesie.
"What the fuck..." the brunette murmured.
"I'm Agent Romanoff."
"I don't care who you are, let me go or I swear to god..." she trailed off, her threat falling very flat, given one of them was tucked up in bed and the other was posed like a femme fatale in the corner.
Romanoff laughed and shook her head, "I told Fury he shouldn't be the one to bring you in."
"Yeah, he's not much of a charmer," Aria said, her wary eyes never leaving the woman, "I suppose drugging and taking me against my will didn't help either."
"We aren't the bad guys, Miss Stark," she said, a slight seductive rasp to her voice that Aria could imagine had ruined many men.
"Well in my experience the good guys don't stick needles in you."
"Yeah, sorry about that," the man she'd seen in the kitchen, with the spiky hair, walked in, "I'm Barton."
"Your name is Barton?"
"Clint Barton."
"And you, Romanoff?"
"Natasha."
"Well, Clint, Natasha," she stood up, "I think it would be best if you just let me leave and we all forget any of this ever happened. I'm not sure what you'repas hoping to gain from this, if it's ransom... not sure if you've heard but my assets are a little tied up at the moment."
Natasha raised an eyebrow, "Like I said, we're not the bad guys."
She crossed her arms to mask the slight sway in her stance- whatever they'd tranquilized her with had clearly not fully worn off, "You have strange recruitment tactics then."
"Yeah, sorry about that." Clint mumbled.
"Aria-"
"Aurelia," she interjected, "to you."
A flicker of amusement. Point taken.
"Aurelia, we brought you here because you're in danger."
"Is being kidnapped not enough danger?" she steeled her gaze, "My home is safe. My father works in national security, that place is impenetrable."
"And remind me how you got here?" Natasha quipped, walking forwards, slowly, naturally predatory.
Aria tilted her head in challenge, "You're trapping yourself in a Cartesian circle here."
"Your father's tech is good- I'll give you that. It was hard work bypassing his security systems. But the people you really need to worry about might just be the ones you open the door for."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Your father's business wasn't as straight forward as he liked to pretend." Clint shrugged.
She snapped around to him, "My father was an honest man."
"Hm."
"Your father wasn't taken at random, Aurelia." Natasha said plainly.
"Fine, he builds weapons and- Of course he was a target. That doesn't mean-"
Natasha cut her off firmly, "It means someone knew exactly who he was. Exactly where he'd be. Exactly how to take him."
She swallowed. Her face paled.
A second passed. Her mouth was dry.
It was a truth she'd refused to face. Up until now.
She tried to wipe any reaction off her face. Any hint of emotion.
"So, what, you kidnap me and hide me in this psych ward?"
"It's protective custody."
"White walls, no windows?"
"You can leave this room. The facility is secure."
Without another word, she brushed past them and out into the corridor. The pair shared an exasperated glance then followed after her.
She didn't even check they were following, calling, "You guys work here?"
"Sometimes. When we're not in the field." Natasha answered.
"Great, I need a desk."
"No, that's not how it works," Clint paused, "Why would you need a desk?"
"I'm going to find out why my father was taken..." her jaw tightened, "And you're going to make them pay."
