December 24th, 2010
Manhattan, New York

The door to Steve's apartment swung open, as it tended to do most mornings, revealing a grinning Aurelia Stark on the other side. "Merry Christmas Stevey!" she chirped loudly.

He looked up from the book he was reading and smirked, "Stevey?"

"I'm feeling the festive spirit. Trying out new nicknames."

"Steve is just fine, don't worry."

"I'm sorry for spreading holiday cheer throughout the land! Is it not Christmas Eve?" she flopped onto the couch next to him. "What'cha reading? Brave New World? No wonder you don't feel festive."

She took the book from his hands and placed it on the table, "When are you heading to California?"

"This afternoon." she paused, "I'm sorry I don't want to-"

"Fury really has you working Christmas Eve?"

She raised an eyebrow, "Working? You think I'm getting paid for this? I wish."

"Well Fury assigned you to take care of me, did he not?"

"Yeah, in June. That mission ended in July."

"So you're just..."

"Spending time with you because I like spending time with you? Because we're friends? Is that so proposterous?"

His cheeks flushed red, "I guess not. Do you not have better things to do?"

"Evidently not." she paused, "I'm sorry I can't be with you tomorrow. I don't want you to be alone but-"

"No, don't be ridiculous. You should be with your family." he smiled, though it didn't reach his eyes, "I'll be fine. I like alone time."

"Well, we can celebrate early, make today our Christmas. Which means... early presents!" She pressed a small silver envelope into his hands, "Merry Christmas, Steve."
