And I can't find the patience
For all the conversations
And all of these blank faces
I should leave, I haven't yet
But when you smile, I just forget
But I can stay a while, I guess

June 10th, 2010
Manhattan, New York

Steve sat on the edge of the bed, eyes fixed on the laminate floor before him.

He seemed to do that a lot, Aria had noted. She hovered in the doorway, head cocked to the side. He'd heard her enter- that she was sure of- but he hadn't moved to acknowledge her. He never did.

Ever since he'd woken, he'd been a shell of a man, not the paragon of masculinity she'd read about.

He barely ate, barely drank, barely spoke: he simply sat and thought. Surely that was the worst think he could do, stay trapped in his head, his head full of thoughts of the past. A past that was long gone.

He'd been determined, by her superiors, as unfit to be released into society on his own, and as such he was being held at SHIELD. More than a week had passed and Aria wasn't sure that he'd made any progress. Then again, she wasn't even sure what progress looked like.

Surely nobody was expecting him to laugh at her jokes or chat away easily. He'd woken up in an entirely new world, with nothing of the life he'd known, besides Aria's vague relation to an old friend of his. The fully grown granddaughter of a 20-year-old playboy.

She took a step forward, "Good morning, Steve. How are you feeling?"

He glanced up, turquoise eyes met brown. A beat. "Fine."

She didn't pry. It was the same answer everyday. Fine. No worse than yesterday, no better. The same. Numb. He wasn't fine.

"Can I get you anything?"

"I'd like to leave."

He didn't hesitate before that response. Perhaps the first thing he'd said to her with conviction.
