(Authors note at the end please read)
The air around me felt sticky and warm. A plate full of flat cakes piled with sticky brown liquid sat in front of me. Melissa sat on my left while Jolie sat on my right. Hundreds of other teens sat at the long table. Alex stood at the head sweat pouring down his forehead and neck. Nervousness crept up my spine making the wind pick up speed for a couple seconds. Slowly but surely Alex began to talk.
"Welcome to the Nation!" He greeted us with fake enthusiasm. "I'm sure you've gotten your feel around the place for the past two days. I would like to formally apologize to some of you for taking you away from your families but it's for your own good." He paused taking a breath then continuing.
"Throughout the next week you will be trained in different aspects. Then at the end of each day one of the Nation workers will answer your questions. Every question you have will be answered. I don't care what the question is it will be answered one-hundred percent truthfully."
Distrustful expressions began to circle around the table.
"So we can ask anything and they have to answer it truthfully? They can't lie?" Someone yelled from the other end of the table.
"Correct. At the end of the week you will be given a one question assessment that may prove to be harder than you will anticipate. Choose well."
With that he walked out of the room and servants began to bustle around asking if anyone needed more food.
"This doesn't make any sense! Why would they bring us here to just answer our questions?!" Melissa exclaimed.
"Maybe they aren't as bad as we thought." I suggested without really believing it myself.
"You don't really believe that do you?"
I shook my head honestly. I glanced around the room looking for Tamara. She was sitting with some other girls talking and giggling. Acting like nothing had ever happened. I didn't blame her.
"She's scared of you." Melissa said looking at Tamara as well.
"I know. She should be."
"Korey what's really going on here. I think I deserve to know."
"You're right. Follow me."
I brought her out of the mess hall. I told her everything from my parents to the Nation kidnapping me to Gladious dying to seeing his ghost.
A shocked expression crossed her face followed by a worried look.
"Korey...you need to leave this place."
That wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I thinking yelling and screaming.
"Why? I'm fine really the ghosts-" I began.
"No." She cut me off. "Seriously you need to get out now."
"Why?"
"Because of what Alex told us."
"What do you mean?"
"You mean he didn't tell you about the prophecy?"
"What prophecy?"
"Like a sweeping fire, like a tidal wave. She'll come in like a crashing bull. Destroy the land and oceans. Haunting ghosts fill her with loss for the family she never knew. Friends and enemies foes and allies. Dead by dawn. Dead by dawn."
"What are you saying?"
"This had to be you Korey. You told me that Alex told you that you were the one who had to had to save them."
"But if this is me, and I'm destined to save them, they why do I have to leave?"
"Because of what Alex said after that."
I breathed in knowing what was coming next.
"That whoever this girl is will be killed before she affects the world." Her voice cracked as she spoke. "If you don't leave you're going to be killed."
