In Love With My Best Friend (Tsukki x Yams)

14: Distance.

The next morning, Tsukishima hoped to talk it out with Yamaguchi during practice but, the freckled boy ignored his best friend through the while practice. Yamaguchi just practiced his jump serves by himself, and occasionally doing receives throughout the day. 

Of course, Tsukishima didn't wanna interrupt him so, he just waited until after practice to talk to him. 

"Good work today!" Daichi clapped his hands, signaling that practice was over and we could go home. 

Once Daichi finished that sentence, Yamaguchi rushed to the club room and put his clothes on as quickly as possible. He did it so quick that Tsukki was just putting his trousers on as Yams dashed on out. 

"Yamaguchi! Wait!" Tsukishima shouted, just catching him before he ran out again. "Why've you been avoiding me?" Tsukki asked, sounding a bit sad. 

"I haven't been avoiding you?" Yamaguchi replied with a confused tone. He totally has been, it's just his acting is better than usual. 

"You definitely have." Tsukki scoffed, crossing his arms. "What's wrong?" His tone changed from condescending to concerned in a heartbeat. 

Tsukishima didn't realize that Yamaguchi watched him kiss a girl he solely hated. The blonde boy didn't realize that he shattered his best friend's heart into millions of pieces in a heartbeat... shattered the heart of the boy he loved. 

He didn't know it yet but that was his biggest mistake yet. 

"Listen Tsukki, I'm fine!" Yamaguchi tried to force a smile on his face but, he just couldn't this time. He couldn't look at Tsukishima in the face and pretend that everything was fine. His heart broke last night and Tsukishima didn't even know it. 

"Are you sure--?" Tsukishima asked, as his eyes followed Yamaguchi who was walking out of the gym, not staying to answer Tsukki's question. 'I need to find out what's going with Yamaguchi.' Tsukishima thought to himself, feeling his heart ache a little. 

But, as much as Tsukishima wanted to figure out what was going on in Yams' head, he never had the opportunity to. Through the rest of the 1 1/2 months of summer break, Yamaguchi distanced himself with Tsukki and focused more on volleyball this summer break. Tsukishima knew that he messed up somewhere along the lines, and that's when he knew that Yamaguchi did see him and that girl. 

Eventually, school started back up once again and they were both in the same class since nothing changes after break. The only thing that did change was that there was a new girl in class, and guess who it was? It was the waitress and her name was Haruhi Aiura. 

When she realized that she was in the same class as Tsukishima, she stuck to him like those green sticky things that stick on your shoe after walking through the grass. That meant that Yamaguchi couldn't talk it out with Tsukki, and they both knew that. 

Rrrrrinnngggg!

That signaled that class was over and Yamaguchi quickly rushed out because he didn't want to see Haruhi smothered all over Tsukishima. 

"Wait, Yamaguchi!" Tsukishima shouted, trying to get out of Haruhi's grip but, Yamaguchi decided to dart out anyways. "Yamaguchi..." Tsukki trailed off, his heart slowly breaking more and more everyday. 

Through the months that Yamaguchi distanced himself, Tsukishima felt more and more disappointed everyday. Mostly because he knew it was partly his fault but, he just wished Yamaguchi would let him explain. 

"C'mon TsuTsu! Wanna go get lunch together?" Haruhi giggled, but Tsukishima was still looking out the door, hoping that it was Yamaguchi next to him and not Haruhi. 

"No thanks." Tsukki shoved the girl off of his arm, putting on his headphones and walking out of the classroom. 

Of course, that made the girl upset and she knew the reason why Tsukishima didn't like her. It was because his heart belonged to Yamaguchi but, that wasn't going to stop her. So, she went along her way to go and find Yamaguchi.

"Hey!" Haruhi called out to the freckled boy who didn't know who was calling out for him. "Yamaguchi right?" She giggled, being extra polite to the confused boy. 

"Yeah, and you are?" Yamaguchi questioned the bubbly girl standing in front of him. Thing is, he knew exactly who this was, he just didn't like her. 

"I'm Haruhi Aiura!" She gleamed, holding out her hand for Yamaguchi to shake. But, Yams could read and see right through her. He knew how phony her act was but, he went along with it. 

"Tadashi Yamaguchi." He politely smiled, harbouring the ill feelings for her deep into his mind. "Did you need something?" He asked, opening his locker to get his lunch out. 

"Yeah." She dropped the fake act, slamming Yamaguchi's locker shut. "I need you to kind of back off or reject Tsukishima in some way. Got it?" Haruhi giggled through her teeth, clearly mad with Yamaguchi. 

"For what?" Yamaguchi scoffed, starting to lose his temper with this girl. Of course Yams was more on the passive side but, this girl was starting to get on his nerves. "You're the one always near Tsukki so, why do I need to back off?" Yams spat with a bit of sass.

"Listen, I don't know what you and Tsukishima have but, he's mine. What am I even saying?" Haruhi scoffed at her own sentence. "He'd never love you the way you love him." She snickered, walking away, and sending Yamaguchi back into a flashback of that one nightmare. 

At first sight, you'd think this girl would be a sweet, and kind girl. Under that surface, that beautiful skin, is an ugly and conniving hag. Under that flesh of hers, she's cold and ruthless, and Yamaguchi saw that. 

'How could Tsukishima ever love that ?' Yamaguchi thought to himself, watching Haruhi strut away. 'What does she have that I didn't ?' He sighed, tears stinging the corner of his eyes. 

And with that, Yamaguchi decided to go and find Tsukishima and end things right there. Maybe it was for the best? Even if it broke Yamaguchi's heart in two, he couldn't keep doing this.
