"You look like you need a hand." I hummed casually, my (e/c) eyes lingering on the upside down blond on the branch below me. "EH?! Oh! (Y/n)-chan!" Naruto calls, giving me a wave. I chuckle as I pull out a kunai leaning down as I hold it over the rope, glancing at Naruto. "I'm gunna cut you down so make sure you land on your feet, okay? We don't need any injuries." Without waiting for a response I sliced the rope, freeing the boy from his upside down prison and watching as he flipped midair and landed on his feet, rubbing the back of his head. "Thanks! I gotta go though!" He turned to run, my eyes widening as I yelled. "Wait! Naruto!" But sadly, the blond was long gone. I sighed dramatically, shaking my head before turning to the next teammate on the list. It didn't take me long to get to where I was going, my eyes landing on the pinkette's unconscious form as I moved over to her, giving her a nice poke to the shoulder. "Sakura. Wakey wakey, we've got a Jounin to beat up." The pinkette shifted slightly, blinking her eyes before her head snaps around, her eyes widening at the sight of me. "Hey Sakura! It looks like you were put under genjutsu, but whatever you saw wasn't real, okay?" Sakura shakes her head firmly, pushing off of the ground. "NO! It was real! S-Sasuke he.. I HAVE to find him! NOW!" I huffed as I grabbed her arm to keep her from running off, speaking calmly. "Sakura, he's FINE! I promise! But I think I know the goal of this test so if you would just-" I stopped mid sentence releasing my grip on her arm to hold my now throbbing cheek, my eyes wide from being slapped. "Just shut up (y/n)! I'm going to find Sasuke!" I turned my gaze to the ground, growling slightly as I clinched my fist. "Whatever. Do what you want then." Sakura scoffed as she bolted away from me, my cheek aching and my eyes tearing up. I sniffled softly, using the sleeve of my hoodie to brush my tears away before holding my head high. "Well, I suppose I'm out of time to ask Sasuke." Kakashi who now stood behind me, chuckled slightly as he pushed himself off of the tree he was resting on, shrugging innocently. "It definitely looks like it. What will you do now? You're all alone. No teammates and no chance at all." I glanced back at the man, a wide unnerving smile on my face as I spoke simply. "Oh? They might not be willing to help me but that doesn't mean I'm alone." Kakashi gave me a closed eye smile and a nod. "Alright then. Do your best. I have high hope for you after all." I giggled, holding my hands behind my back as I stood calmly. "Osiris. He's all yours." Kakashi hummed in confusion before jumping when he felt something bite his ankles, turning and narrowing his eyes at the over grown duck, attempting to eat his pants before he turned to the girl with a deadpan. "This is your secret weapon? A duck?" My smile grew as I gave a single nod. "Yup! Although, He's actually a goose. A once untitled goose who now goes by the name.. death." Kakashi sighed, rolling his eye before vanishing from my sight, my body automatically dodging his punch from the right, pulling my Katana out as I sliced it in his direction, managing to cut a single strand of silver hair from his head, his body in a limbo like contortionist pose to dodge before he vanished completely reappearing behind me. I pushed my blade backwards, ramming the hilt of my katana into his ribs before turning in one swift motion to kick him, Kakashi managing to block. "You know.." he started, his eye closed in a smile. "I had much higher expectations of you. I feel a little disappointed." I smiled back, the two of us jumping away from eachother, Osiris rushing over to me happily as I gave him a chin scratch before reaching into my pouch, handing him a hand held golden bell with a handle. "Oh? That so? Don't lose those expectations just yet Sensei. I'm more advanced then you think." With a poof, osiris vanished with his bell, just in time for the alarm to ring. I turned my head in that direction before chuckling. "Oh! Seems I lost track of time. Oh well, Here ya go." Kakashi blinked in surprise when I walked over to him, taking his hand and placing the three circular bells in them, his eye wide as he reached for his hip, where they were only to find nothing. Kakashi visibly grinned under his mask, ruffling my hair. "You were right to correct me. Let's head back. You can tell me how you did it at lunch, alright?" I gave a smile and a nod as we walked back together, snickering when I spotted a tied up Naruto with Sakura and Sasuke sitting on either side. "Oh!" Kakashi hummed as he stopped, right before we got to the other three. "Don't let them know what the reason for this test was alright? I'll let you know when to speak up." I gave a firm nod, playfully saluting. "Yes sir!" Kakashi nodded, gesturing to me to join the others and I followed his command, jogging over and plopping down Infront of the tied up Naruto. "uh-oh stomach's growling huh? That's too bad. Oh by the way about this exercise.. Well I've decided I won't sent any of you back to the academy." Naruto gasped in excitement while I glanced at my other two teammates keeping quiet. Sakura tilted her head slightly, speaking in confusion. "What? I passed? All I did was faint and fall over.. Do you get points for that?" I chuckled softly at her, sasuke staying quiet while the other two began to celebrate. "Then.. Then That means all four of us.. I mean all four of us-?" Kakashi put his hands in his pockets, giving a closed eye smile as he spoke. "Yes. The three of you are being dropped from the program. permanently." There was a moment of silence before Naruto and Sakura shrieked, Naruto talking a mile a minute. "drop us from the program?! That means we can never become ninja! You said if we couldn't take the bells we'd be sent back to the academy! You can't just change your mind and kick us out!! Why would you do that?!" Kakashi shifted to his other leg, speaking calmly. "Because you three don't think like Ninja. You think like little kids, Like brats." That was the last straw for Sasuke And he jumped up from his spot on the ground rushing towards an uncaring Kakashi who simply flipped him, taking an uncaring seat on his back while he pushes the ravenettes head to the dirt with his foot, Sakura and Naruto panicking. "Sasuke!" Kakashi grunts as he hold Sasuke down, his voice stern. "You think it's all about you." Sakura clenches her fist, yelling angrily. "Let go of Sasuke! You can't just step on him like he's a bug!" Kakashi sighs, completely ignoring the pink haired girl. "You don't know what it means to be a ninja. You think it's a game, huh? Why do you think we put you on squads! Did you consider that question for one moment?" Sakura steps forward slightly, holding a hand to her chest. "Uh, I don't know what you mean?" Kakashi tightens his hold on sasuke, speaking calmly. "I mean, you never realized what this exercise is all about. Not even close." I rolled my eyes slightly, listening as naruto speaks up in confusion. "What it's about?" Kakashi nods. "Yes. that's what determines whether you pass or fail." Sakura gulps slightly, speaking up again. "But that's- I mean, I wanted to ask you about that from the beginning." Kakashi scoffs slightly, raising his voice. "Use your head. three people on a squad, in this case four. Why do you think we would do that?" "AHHH!" Naruto yells in frustration. "How we supposed to know why you picked four people?! We didn't make the rules!!" Kakashi sighs tiredly, shaking his head. "It's so basic! (Y/n)?" I gave a nod to Kakashi, speaking calmly. "Teamwork." Kakashi nods shaking his head as Sakura speaks up. "It means working together? Is that what you mean?" Kakashi rolls his visible eye nodding. "That's what I mean. It's too late now but if all four of you would come at me you might have been able to take them. Well anyway, it's over." Sakura took a step forward, her mint eyes wide in surprise. "You set it up with four people but only three bells! If we worked together I got the bells only three of us could keep them and that would lead to group conflict and the squad would break up!" Me and Kakashi locked eye's him speaking calmly. "Exactly. I purposely pitted you against each other." Sakura and Naruto gasped in shock, Kakashi continuing his speech. "I wanted to see if you could overcome that and put the squad ahead of yourselves. A Genin should have a natural feel for teamwork but you? It never even crossed your mind. Sakura! You obsessed about Sasuke, who was gone, while Naruto was right in front of you and you wouldn't lift a finger to help him! Naruto! You do everything on your own. EVERYTHING. and you Sasuke thought the others were so far beneath you they were worthless. arrogance. Ninja missions are carried out in squads. of course, you need individual skills but teamwork is the most essential element. Every Shinobi understands this. When individuals put themselves above the squad this can lead to failure and death. For example, Sakura, kill Naruto now or Sasuke dies." Naruto and Sakura panic for a minute before Kakashi pulls the kanai away speaking calmly. "That's what happens on a mission. The enemy takes a hostage and you have a an impossible choice and someone ends up dead. On every mission, your life is on the line. Did you look at the stone? The names engraved on it, They are all ninja who are honored as heroes in our village." Naruto starts wiggling in place, my eyes moving to the grass I'm sitting on as I send a silent prayer to Minato, Kushina and Rin, Naruto interrupting the silence. "That's it! That's it! That's it! Now I know! I've decided I'm going to have my name engraved on that stone! I'm not going to live and die for nothing like a dog! I'm going to be a hero! a hero!" I sighed as Kakashi speaks again, his tone more somber then before. "They are a special kind of hero." Naruto smiles widely as he wiggles in his bonds. "What kind of heroes are they?! Come on! tell us! Well?! Well!?" Kakashi stays silent for a moment, his back turned towards us as he stares at the stone. "They're all KIA." I sighed softly, my eyes lingering on the stone. I wonder if my name is there too.. I doubt it.. "ooh! that sounds really cool!" Sakura states ahead sadly, speaking softly. "It means killed in action. They all died." Naruto stops for a moment, his smile falling. "huh? Oh.." I glance up at Kakashi, imagining him as a kid standing in the same place as I exhaled softly. "This is a memorial stone. The names of my closest friends are engraved here." We all say in silence for a moment before Kakashi spoke again. "All right I'm going to give you three another chance but I'm going to make it much harder on you. You'll have three hours to get a bell. Eat lunch now and build up strength, but Naruto doesn't get any. It's your punishment for breaking the rules and trying to eat by yourself. and if anyone tries to feed him, that person will immediately fail. I make the rules, you follow them. got it? Come on (y/n)." I stood up, walking towards Kakashi when sakura speaks up in total confusion. "Huh? Why are you taking her? What about her lunch?" Kakashi hummed softly, patting my head and giving a closed eye smile. "Oh? Well, she's the only one who passed so I want to speak with her about her technique. Not only did she attempt to use teamwork but she also managed to get all three bells from me. Now then, come alone (y/n)." "Yes sensei." I said calmly, following after the man. Peeking at my teammates who all stared at me in shock. The two of us got a decent distance from the trio, Kakashi masking his presence before gesturing me to follow, the two of us appearing in a nearby tree, just close enough for us to hear what they are saying but not enough for them to hear us. "So. What was your strategy for getting the bells?" I chuckled softly, taking the bento he offered me as The two of us began to eat. "Well, it was all about deception. Even though you have seen a small bit of my capabilities, meaning you knew more of my capabilities then the others. With the other three, You never put down your book yet you weren't holding it when we began our fight, meaning you assumed I would be a challenge." Kakashi nodded for me to continue so I did. "Well, I need you to lower your guard and expectations. I used Osiris the goose, as a slight diversion so you would ignore him completely while we fought. In that moment where you turned your attention from him, he grabbed the bells and stayed away from the fight so I could distract you until time was up." Kakashi chuckled softly, giving me a pat on the back. "Very good. I knew I was correct in my assumption about you. You've been on the battlefield before, haven't you?" I smiled sadly, nodding. "Yes. Twice. The first time I got out was pure luck. The second, I killed a man." The aura between us grew thick as we listened to the rest of team seven squabble, watching as Sasuke and Sakura started to feed Naruto. "That's our que. Let's go." I nodded as I grabbed his arm, Both of us abandoning our mostly eaten lunches as we both appeared in front of the team, Kakashi speaking up as thunderclouds rolled in for dramatic flair. "YOU! you broke the rules! I hope you're ready for the punishment, any last words?" Sasuke and Sakura take defensive poses, shaking in fear as Naruto speaks up for the three of them. "B-But you said.." "Yes?" Kakashi hummed in mock impatience. "You said that there were four of us! That's what you said! And that's why.. Sakura and.." Sasuke speaks up for Naruto, his tone never wavering. "we're all on this squad. And we're all in it together." Sakura sits up, still shaking but putting on a strong face. "Yeah! that's right! We gave our lunch to him because the three of us are one!" Naruto frantically nods along with them, shaking in fear. "Yeah yeah yeah yeah! Believe it, yeah! That's right!" Kakashi took a few steps forward menacingly as he spoke. "The four of you are one? that's your excuse?" And like a light, Kakashi flips his frown to a smile. "You pass." The other three blink in confusion as a big smile breaks out on my face. "huh??" Kakashi puts his hands in his pockets, still smiling. "You pass." Sakura stares incredulously at Kakashi before speaking shakily. "What do you mean? how did we pass?" Kakashi chuckles giving a small nod. "You're the first squad that ever succeeded. The others did exactly what I said and fell into every trap. They couldn't think for themselves. A ninja must see through deception. In the ninja world, those who break the rules are scum. That's true, But those who abandon their friends are worse than scum." Naruto sniffles slightly, tears dripping from his face as he speaks. "He's.. he's yaknow.. he's kind of cool." Kakashi smiles, reaching over and petting my head as he speaks. "The exercise is over. Everyone passes. Team seven starts It's first mission tomorrow." Naruto laughs happily, yelling to himself. "Yes! I did it! I did it! believe it, I'm a ninja! Ninja! Ninja." Kakashi nods before turning and walking away, Sasuke and Sakura following as I walk up behind Naruto's log, listening to everyone cheer. "Let's go home." Naruto smiles happily before realizing his predicament. "Ahh! I knew they'd do this! They do this every time! hey you forgot to untie meeaaah!" In an instant, I cut Naruto down, giving him a smile as I held my hand out for him. "Don't worry Naruto. I'll always be around to cut you down." The blond chuckled as he grabs my hand, not letting how as we catch up with the others, smiling together happily.
