Sighing softly I hold onto my Hoppsin beanie baby, anxiety blooming in my gut while I'm sit on the dirty subway seat. Scooting myself further to the corner of the seat I watch everyone's movements, making sure that they stay away from me. My anxious mind going into overdrive on possible scenarios on how these strangers could hurt me..
Slowly the train slides to a stop and the doors open. Holding my purse close to my chest, sliding my toy rabbit inside. I step off the subway car. Walking up the steps I briskly walk to the surface, looking down at my phone for the directions to the card store. Smiling to myself I turn the corner and see it. Quickly crossing the street I enter, looking around I notice majority of the people here are male. Inwardly wincing I begin to look around, making sure I stay away from them. Hoppsin's head poking out of my purse.
"Hello! How can I help you?" A large bearded man stands behind the counter covered in video game tattoos and piercings. Wearing a D20 shirt covered in dragons. A welcoming smile on his face.
"Oh um.. I'm.. I'm looking for uh.. yu-gi-oh cards..?" Avoiding his intimidating gaze I stare at the floor, reaching into my purse I rub Hoppsin's paw for some semblance of comfort.
The man scratches his beard as he thinks, eyes wandering around the shop. "Oh... yup we got some of them in stock. We have boxed sets, singular packs.. and the tins." He says with a shrug of his shoulders.
"Can.. can I see the tin box ones please?" Stepping up to the counter idly looking around at the various trinkets and statues of video game characters. Dang, wish I had money for this stuff..
"Sure thing, I'll be right back." The man walks into the back of the store and comes back out moments later holding 3 different tin boxes under his arm.
Setting them down on the counter with a thud he looks at me. "Here ya go." I lean forward and look at the box air, spotting a dinosaur on one I smile eagerly.
"How much is that one?" Pointing to the one with the large dinosaur on it.
"Thattle be... Twenty five dollars." Reaching into my purse I grab my wallet sliding the money out, handing it to him he smiles and rings it up. Handing me the tin box in a white bag I smile and thank him before leaving quickly. Sliding the box into my purse with a smile. Pulling out Hoppsin before zipping it closed tightly. Holding him close to my chest, rubbing his paw as I make my way back to the subway.
"Are you happy with your purchase my lady?" A voice speaks softly. Looking down at Hoppsin I smile wider, rubbing his paw gently soothing myself. He looks back with his black beady eyes.
"Yea I am Hoppy. I love dinosaurs I hope I get some cool looking cards for my collection." Squeezing him gently we make our long trek back to our apartment.
- 40 Minutes Later -
Walking inside I shut the door behind me, locking it tight before walking down the hall I stop myself. Looking back at the door I bite my lip feeling the urge bubble to the surface, turning around I begin to double check if it's locked. Opening the door I reach outside I jiggle the nob. Hearing the commotion a giant Rhino looking creature's head peaks out from behind a door.
The beast snorts out in relief before stepping further into the light.. A triceratops like frill on his head, his entire body looks like that of a T-Rex with Rhino like plating. It's legs instead of a Rex's are a trikes.. To add to the deadly factor, its tail is covered in sharp retractable spikes.
He walks towards me holding an empty cardboard box in his tiny hands. Having been unpacking out things from our move, from Rural Vermont to the big city of New York.. "Oh! Thanks Proc!" I say to the mammalian lizard fusion. He simply snorts at me again with a smile, I turn away drom the door and rub his snout with a smile of my own.
